Quick Question Is Fully Synthetic Castrol Edge Oil

As title and topic, it's very cheap in Halfords ATM so worth the price, normally I wouldn't bother but it's been good stuff in my honda s2000.

So just wondering if Castrol edge 5w30 fully synthetic is fine for my 2007 d4d. First oil change ill be doing on the car.

Thanks in advance.

Should be ok. Castrol website recommends Diesel edge 5w30 - is that the grade the handbook recommends?

PS - what price is the Edge in Halfords?

Unfortunately I don't have a handbook for the car grrr so can't have a look.

It's just over £32, which is only a couple of quid more expensive than bog standard comma stuff. If it wasn't as cheap i wouldn't bother tbh.

I tend to use 5W40 on my D4D, but it's a Mk1 Yaris and the recommended oil is, for some reason, thicker for that (10W40 IIRC).

I used it last oil change, no problems but it did make the camchain rattle for a few weeks. I put it down to being thin oil but 4k on, the car is fine.

I will use it again next oil change.

The 2008 manual says 10w-30 or 5w-30 for UK use with 5w-30 being preferred.

15w-40 and 20w-50 are listed but the are for temperatures higher than we get in a UK winter so they are a bit too thick for the UK in cold temperatures.

Key thing though - as important as the viscoscity - is that the oil should be API SL or API SM spec for petrol cars and ACEA B1 or API CF-4 or CF spec for diesel use.

You should check on the can that it meets these specs.

My Mark1 handbook suggests 5-30 for cold weather.. I use it all year.

Cynthetric oil for a Yaris? Overkill.

Well you could say the same thing about using V-Power diesel but I still use it now and then :)

There's no harm using better oil, and if you're the sort ho never checks it then you're better off with better oil in the beginning ;)

(BTW you're right, the recommended is 10W30; Not sure why I thought it was 10W40!)

Oilman must be on holiday - otherwise he's be ading his input by now....

Ordinary mineral oil and even semi-synthetic (which is based on ordinary mineral oil) breaks down with use, so it provides gradually less and less protection.

If you buy an oil that meets the required spec and change it at the recommended intervals, then even even though it is providing less protection than when new, it is still providing more protection than Toyota think the engine needs as a minimum.

Except - different ways of using the car (eg town stop-start) cause the oil to break down more quickly and different engines (eg the turbo in the diesel) need more protection than less sophisticated components - so you never really know how much protection your used mineral oil is giving and how good it still is.

But if you use a fully synthetic, then it provides the full protection right up to the point you change it. It doesn't break down like mineral oil.

So having spent £10k-£14k on a car, I'd rather spend an extra £5-£10 once a year, buying an oil that I know will give it the best protection right up to the point I change it again.

^ Totally agree, i will changing the oil in February. I believe its 4.1 litres for a full oil change? (need to a acquire a manual)

I wouldn't use anything other than fully synthetic in any car, also i dont believe changing oil every 5-6k like somepeople in the yaris i will be changing it when Toyota recommend. In my boosted honda i change it a little earlier due to the car being boosted and the gears inside the supercharger.

Thanks
