Rav D4D 2002

Hi,can anyone throw some light on my problem. My Rav D4D has become harder to start over the recent months but worse in the cold weather. A new set of genuine Toyota glow plugs have been fitted along with new fuel filter, oil filter and air filter, also a new Battery.

After pre-heating you have really hang on to the key before it will start and sometimes runs for 5 seconds and then shuts off. After pressing the hand primer several times it eventually starts and is okay for a few weeks but I have noticed that it makes some sort of howling noise like 'Orca the Whale' my wife says but this seems to go when it has warmed up. I have also noticed that you have to make sure that you are in the right gear when slowing down for roundabouts etc as there seems to be no power in the higher gears like turbo lag. This doesn't happen all the time.

When the car is running it feels fine however I do think it is down on acceleration but this may just be me. Any advice would be truly helpful.

welcome to the forum.

One of the oily-engine-burning fanatics should be on soon to give you some ideas, once they get back from last minute Christmas shopping and the Office Christmas Party

hi Mate

Merry X-mas

you ve replied yr question by your self.

1. Have an air escaped (pushed out) from the injection system by the same booster pump;

2. Have all four injectors tested on the fuel stand and calibrate injection portion of diesel.

Cheers/Igor

Itis better now to have a drink and celebrate X-mas :D

Hi rambler

Thanks for your prompt response and you were 'spot on' with the Orca call as it sounds exactly like mine. As yours has been doing it for 6 years now I won't worry too much!

Cheers and happy Christmas

Hi everyone, thanks for all your advice. I will endeavour to check the various points made and let you know the outcome.

Could anyone tell me what the solenoid on the top of the fuel filter housing unit is for as I did notice a slight fuel leak which seems to have stopped now. i just wondered if this might be the problem.

Hi

That would appear to be the priming pump for purging air out of the fuel system ( It should be Black and and made from firm rubber /plastic material)

Check the the fuel lines into and out of the fuel pump that they are now loose and letting the system suck air into the fuel systems

If the car runs well after pumping this a few times it would appear to be air in the fuel system is your problem

Hope this helps
