I like the way problems are solved on this forum. Check engine light on my Avensis 53 plate 2003 came on and i suspect it is the EGR because what i get now is 27.8mpg and sometimes goes down to 23.6mpg. I'm hoping to clean it myself please can you point me to a post on the forum where this was done so i can try.

2. If i want to clean from a garage do you have an idea how much it will cost because i stay where the parking is outside and trying to fix it in this very cold weather is another thing because i stay in Glasgow.

3. If you advise i take it to a local garage do you know any good one around glasgow. if anyone stays around here

Please i need your help because i bought the car not too along; it drives very well but the fuel consumption and now the check engine light every other thing on the car is in perfect other.

Thanks

Abbey

There is a very recent thread on here about cleaning the EGR, just do a quick scan down the page.

Once you remove it to be cleaned up, why not take it indoors or to a shed? You don't have to do it at the roadside.

Are the photos taken off from your car?

If so, is it a diesel or a petrol engine?

To me it looks like a petrol engine, judging by the sign saying: "Use Iridium plugs"

To my knowledge, only diesel engines have the egr valve.

Hook your car up to a OBD reader and see what fault code comes up.

It's hard to tell for sure, but I think the EGR is the silver item on top of the engine in the first picture with a Toyota sticker on it.

I could be wrong but have a close look at it and see what it is attached to.

Thanks guys for your response i think i getting to know more about car engine. If the EGR is only found on diesel engine then i don't have it because my engine is a petrol engine. The picture was actually taken by me about an hour ago

What type of OBD reader do u recommend so that i can get one off eBay and check.

What do you think i can do to improve the fuel consumption?

If you've got the 2 litre petrol engine, it could be one of the oxygen

sensors being on its way, as it has got four of them. But that is just me guessing.

Dont have a OBD reader myself, but maybe someone else can give you a suggestion.

If you want to attach it with laptop then ELM 327

and if you want it independent without computer then get U480.

I prefered ELM 327, just as it can connect with my laptop and I can play more.

Let us know how you get along with it.

Cheers.

So it's not a D4D?

it's a D4D 2.0 VVTI T-SPIRIT Toyota Avensis

Probably not a D4D (Direct injection 4 cylinder Diesel), but a D4 (Direct injection 4 cylinder petrol)
