Rav4 Help Please !

Hi, Due to the recent bad weather I made a very impulsive buy and purchased a 05 plate RAV4 from a reputable VW garage in Derby. It is a 2.0ltr petrol with 45k miles although unconfirmed due to incomplete service history. The RAV drives okay but when I lift my foot off the accelerator there feels like a slight hestitation like coil breaking down or faulty plug lead. It is very smooth when ticking over and also when accelerating. Problem only there when you take your foot off the gas.

As agreed with the garage in Derby I took it to my local Toyota garage in Falkirk but they reported 'No fault found'. I suspect they only tested it in the workshop as the road conditions were very bad for a road test.

It is also only returning around 24mpg around town.

Any feedback would be most welcome.

Hi Tam, and welcome to Ye Madhoose,

Your mpg is indeed a bit sore, so I would try this as an eliminator (recently did it on a Renault Megane...nuffsed, eh?)

Get the car ticking over and stand behind it, but not for 3 hours........

Are you smelling any unburnt fuel?....Change the HT leads as you suspect, OR get a wee in line High Tension voltage tester from HALFRAUDS. It certainly points to ignition,or coil(s), and if your spark plugs are Iridium type, they are supposed to last 60k miles....pants, change them. Then avoid Supermarket petrol....it's manufactured by weasels.

Keep us postificated,

Big Kev

If you haven't driven a RAV4 before, you will find that it does tend to slow down itself - much more than a car. If its idling ok and accelerating well, then can't be too much wrong.

Mind you, its news to me that there is anything reputable about Derby ( :P ). And if you live in Falkirk, ye canna be born in Derby!

The other thing is that Toyota dealers only have skeleton staff on at this time of year - need I say more ?

Anyway, welcome to the forum and if you are ever near Glasgow, Big Kev will give you a shot and a try in his car as well

Hi Kev and all, thanks for your inputs. I am going back to the toyota garage in Falkirk tomorrow to see if they will take it for a quick test drive with me in the car as I cannot believe that this is how a RAV4 should run. I did pay them £40 for the initial diagnosis so hope they will not charge me for a 10 min test drive.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers

This will irritate you to death if you let it. These RAVs are capable of this hesistation - some more than others.

You can start be checking it has the proper Iridium plugs in it which will set you back about £40 but it will not run right without them. You can also try a bottle of injector cleaner in a full tank of fuel but that brings me to the next subject. Stop using supermarket weasel pee and use branded fuel - preferably the top grade. It will cost you a bit more but try it and see. Forget about the fuel consumption just now, that will be dire in sub zero conditions anyway and ignore the trip meter - you have to check by calculation.

Finally, don't be too disappointed if it still does it a bit. It has gone from the very new ones but still plagues some of the 4.2s.
