Modern Diesels do take longer to warm up than their petrol counterparts. Higher efficiency, more of the combustion heat is being used for traction energy rather than heating up the cooling water.

My 1.4D Yaris needs about 5 miles of driving, in the temperatures we've experienced recently, to warm up fully. It's much better, in this respect, to my previous Vauxhall 1.7 Diesel which needed twice the distance!

Its a price you pay for having a more efficient engine - a diesel produces less waste heat and it's waste heat from the engine that powers a car heater....

My A3 diesel can take 15 miles to warm up to "normal" temp on the way to work - but it has the benefit of a little auxilliary unit that burns diesel fuel and produces heat for the heater to compensate - so in the current freezing weather, it actually produces useful heater output quicker than our petrol yaris...

But I assume you haven't one of those such units in a diesel Yaris and its perfectly normal for a diesel car to take longer to warm up.

What we've done to boost the heater output of our Yaris is get one of those 12v ceramic heater fans that they sell in Maplins and car accessory shops and I've fastened it under the drivers seat pointing out into the driver's footwell using cable ties.

I've hidden the wiring behind the trim and we just plug it into the cigarette lighter socket on cold days when we want a bit of early heat and pull the plug out when we don't.... Its not brilliant and won't cure an ice age - but it does put a bit of heat out on the worst days...

Thanks for the response guys.

Considering the car is only used on short jorneys i think it will be a problem that I am going to live with or just may be look at another car.

Will be taking the car to Toyota as the car is still under warranty so may as well make use of it.
