Hi, just joined and also have a query on a problem on our Rav4 diesel (2005). Malfunction system light has came up on the dash also vsc & trc lights came on, engine went into limp mode (which isn't great when towing a trailer and you have lots of steep hills to get back home). Figured out that we switch the engine off and leave for a minute, then restart. Malfunction light stays on, other ones have went out and the car revs freely again. Can anyone give me an idea on what the problem could be and if expensive to repair?

Have a search on this forum for EGR ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation ) valve and SCV ( Suction Control Valves ) and compare your symptoms with those in the posts. It does sound like one or the other. I don't have enough experience to say if you have a 4.2 or 4.3 RAV but there are "pinned" notes in the top section of the RAV forum on cleaning the EGR valve and changing the SCV for one model or the other. Come back if you can't nail it with the information in the other posts.

Cheers Chris, have had a look and hopefully our local mechanic can confirm that it is the EGR, and that it hasn't done to much damage or if any to the engine, but can't complain to much as the rav d4d has done a 100k.

Best regards

Kev

100k - it's nearly run in then ;) I think the general view on here is change the oil regularly, use non-supermarket fuel and the RAV will last an awful long time. Good luck
