T180 Tyre Wear. Normal?

Hey all. Happy new year

I have had my 06 T180 for approx one year in which time I have done approx 10,000 miles. When I got the car the front OS tyre was almost brand new. The front ns was nearly new. I have checked them every month and kept pressures to 32psi. On checking the treads I noticed the following

Front OS. Edge of tyre (both edges) 4mm. Middle area 5.5mm

Front NS Edge of tyre. 2mm. Middle area 4mm

Is it normal for the front tyres to wear on the edges quicker??

Also this business of 3/4 of the tyre surface has to have 1.6mm minimum. Does that mean an outer edge can be near bald as long as the rest of the tyre is 1.6mm? Seems a little confusing to me

thanks

Shaun

Hi Shaun

I had Duellers on my previous RAV and they wore the same. The seem particularly sensitive to being under inflated - mayby the walls are quite stiff so keep them right on their pressure for maximum life. The law recognisies that most wide tyres are sensitive to tiny variations in alignment and prone to shoulder wear so you are allowed to have a minimum of 1.6mm for the central 75% and you only need visible tread for the remaining 12.5% on each shoulder. There must be no bald patches.

Great cheers Don. knew I could count on some good advice from you.

So the outer edge just needs visible tread? therefore my tyres have a good deal of miles left in them?

I have kept them bang on 32 psi since I got the car

In this info it says you don't need visible trerad but be careful as there is little distinction between no tread and the next stage which is the reinforcing chords being exposed. Generally, by the time the tread has dissapeared from the shoulder the centre has gone below the 2mm wear indicators UNLESS the tracking is out.

My thoughts - if the tyre is wearing as you suggest, then this bit of the tyre is obviously doing heavier work than the less worn parts. (Otherwise it would have the same mm left).

Now, if you continue to use the tyres below 2mm on the edges, you will have lost some of the grip that that part of the tyre has been giving you. So yes it may be legal but in real terms, the grip must be reduced....and to what degree would be anyones guess depending on road conditions; the way you drive etc.

I would personally have the wheels laser-aligned then get better tyres for it....having got a report on what changes if any the alignment required.

But then I tend to drive fairly hard.

Does the grip reduce or increase???

Hi, I have had my T180 for 2 1/2 years and have the same tread wear. I check my pressures reguarly and have had laser alignment carried out twice in 18 months with no adjustment. I mentioned it at the last service and MOT and was of no concern to Toyota tech. If you do go for laser alighnment ensure it is all four wheels i.e 4x4, its a bit more than say KwikFit or National do on a normal laser check.

Cheers

I don't think you will get perfect wear of those shoulders. Look at any new car coming to the end of its first set of tyres - they are all the same.
