Eratic Idle

Hi, i have a 2000 2.0 petrol avensis, and the idle is very eratic, sometimes it evens stalls. I have had it scanned, but no codes have come up. Has any one got any ideas what it could be. The mechanic who scanned it had a guess at the 02 sensors, but wouldn't that show up on a scan ?. Thanks in advance.

Hi Pete, check or get someone to check for any split or perished vacuum hoses on the inlet side and also the closed circuit emission control system rubber hoses around the engine, you can also get a similar fault if the emission control hoses/pipes get blocked with sludge. There are lots of other things that can cause your problem like spark plugs & leads to a sticking throttle body to name a few but start with the easy stuff.

Hi, thanks for that. I've had new plugs and leads fitted,and 1 or 2 O2 sensors, but not much else apart from normal service items. Will try the bits you've advised. All the best. Pete.
