Can The Upper Glove Box Be Removed?

As the title suggests, i'm hoping to wire in a new stereo in a few days and will be including an Ipod interface.

Ideally i want to hide it away, so i'm looking to feed the wire into the upper storage compartment above the glove box, but as there are no obvious holes to feed the wire through i will probably have to remove it and make a hole.

Has anybody ever removed one, or know how its done?

Any advice is gratefully received.

I think too, the correct place for iPod/USB/SD interface is inside the upper glove box, as new Auris has, so you have to remove that glove box, opperation that can be done in this way it's possible before starting the job you should remove the lower glove compartment first, unlock those 2 stoppers, remove the cylinder joint then flip down the glove compartment (it's the same procedure as you change the cabin filter too). Good luck!

I fitted an ipod adaptor in the upper glove box. But ended up drilling a hole into the stereo area.

The postman brought the bits i have been waiting for, so this weekend i will be changing the stereo.

I have done a test fir of the stereo in the fascia surround, and its all good, so i now have two options regarding the ipod location.

IMAG0170.jpg

I can either drill a hole in the tray below the stereo and feed the wire into there, or go ahead with my original plan of locating it in the upper glove box.

Personally i think the glove box plan is the neatest, however i don't like the idea of drilling into something expensive when i have a cheaper alternative if things go wrong.

Secondly, i now need to find a location for the microphone. Has anybody got a handsfree kit (OEM or after market) and if so, where is the mic located? I want to try and hide it as best as possible, so if there are any areas designed for it as a factory fit, i'd like to do the same with mine.

Thanks in advance for any further info, so far the help has been fantastic!

Looking nice. Can't wait for some install pics.

Personally I like the upper glove box location because putting the ipod/mp3 adaptor under your stereo uses space you will need for CD's and other stuff.

I've just spent a few hours working on the car and losing ample amounts of skin from my hands, and the new stereo is 99% installed..... ( Will explain after the pics)

The removal of the original stereo was easy enough, and took about 5 mins of careful uncliping of dash trim.

First off, the side trim was removed and the vents came out straight after. Very easy to do.

IMAG0173.jpg

Then the stereo was removed, again quite easy to take out.

IMAG0175.jpg

I then made a hole in the side of the tray that fits below the radio, and fed the wire for the Ipod through.

I then fitted the new fascia and the tray and ensured all the wires were accessible to plug into the back of the radio.

IMAG0176.jpg

I located the mic at the top of the piller near the sun visor and fed the cable behind the door seal down to the foot well, and behind the carpet to avoid it interfering with my feet or the pedals.

IMAG0177.jpg

I then plugged the radio in, but found that the car aerial doesn't fit the back of the Alpine stereo, so unfortunately i have to buy a lead tomorrow so i can plug it all in, but i did connect it up and try out a CD to ensure all the steering control work and the sound was acceptable.

Straight away i found that the music was so much clearer and louder, so i look forward to getting it installed 100% tomorrow.

As for losing skin, i decided i would upgrade ALL my lights on the front of the car, so i now have:

Ring xenon max 100% Dipped beam

Ring xenon max 100% High beam

Osram Diadem indicator bulbs

Some Extra white side lights (can't remember the make or name)

IMAG0185.jpg

All the lights now have a whiter and brighter appearance, but have that nice blue tint if viewed head on and in daylight if looking at the bulbs.

The last (awkward job) was to remove the over size roof aerial and replace it with a sharkfin instead, but sadly after a very awkward 15 mins of undoing the base, i found that they are not compatible unless i cut some wires, but i'm not prepared to do that, so i might pay someone to do it for me next month. For now i can live with the original.

I will update this thread tomorrow once the radio is in place.

I agree, it is a better location, BUT i really don't want to drill into the car interior. If i sell the car on it can all be returned to factory fit and nobody would know any different.

As for the storage under the stereo, its not really deep enough for CD's and i wouldn't store them in there anyway, i prefer to have EVERYTHING out of sight. I even put my magic tree in the boot!

The centre storage box can hold any CD's i have in the car, although the Ipod now removes the need for them, so i probably won't have any loose in the car from now on.

Excellent write up and pics. Are you planning on replacing the OEM Speakers too?

At the moment, no.

From the test of the radio last night I am already satisfied that the radio has made a big enough improvement to the sound.

I now have the adapter i need and the radio is fully installed and working fine.

The sound difference is HUGE considering i have only changed the radio, and its not exactly a top of the range head unit.

All steering wheel buttons function properly, BUT the only thing it won't do that the original stereo used to do is turn on and off by using the 'mode' button, but i can live without that feature.

Incase anyone is thinking of doing the same, here is the aerial adapter they might need (If fitting an Alpine it is more than likely you will need one):

Product code is printed just below the item, and is available from Halfords for aprox £4

Right, I have been a busy boy lately, so here are a few pics and a short write up to show off my handy work!

Head unit fully installed:

IMAG0192.jpg

Now i have a tray below it for the Ipod, i decided to put some rubber 'anti slip' surface on it to keep the Ipod in the same place when taking roundabouts etc:

IMAG0189.jpg

IMAG0191.jpg

I had plenty left over so i did the same with the shelf in the glove box (although i don't have a use for it yet):

IMAG0193.jpg

IMAG0196.jpg

I also decided that the boot light was pathetic, so i decided to wire up the LED strip that i bought a few weeks back, and stuck it to the underside of the parcel shelf:

IMAG0197.jpg

IMAG0199.jpg

I simply cut the power to the current boot light, and using some bullet connectors i wired up the LED strip, so it only comes on when the boot is open (like the original light)and it draws less power so it should be safer for the Battery if it was to stay on for some reason.

I also took a couple of pics of the front lights to show what i described in my post yesterday about the blue tint in the headlamps from the indicators, side lights and headlights:

I hope some of that was useful to somebody.

Excellent write and pics.

I like you indicator bulbs. So they have a blue tint but still indicate orange/amber ?????

Since my car is black, I changed my front side lights to orange. looks sweet against the black car.

And I agree the boot light is bad. My watch has a brighter light. May upgrade this too later.

Regards
