Egr Valve & Fuel Filter

Hi Every-one

First post, unfortunately it's a few questions. After being stuck indoors a few weeks ago because of snow,I went out and bought a Rav4. Still not sure if I did the right thing, teach me for being so impulsive. Any way I changed the filters today, the information on the forum very helpful. The priming button on the filter head firms up after a few pumps but I am able to pump it firm again after a minute or so. Is this correct or is there a 'leak'? Might explain why the engine needs a few cranks before starting. Is the EGR not so much of a problem on the 4.2 as I only see it being cleaned on the 4.3 There are a few other issues I will try working through before being a nuisance.

Thanks Steve

Hi Steve

Happy new year

1) The priming button on the filter head firms up after a few pumps but I am able to pump it firm again after a minute or so. Is this correct or is there a 'leak'? ----> do not be concerned -- the task of this booster pump is to remove an air from the system. Once it has happened (when an air escaping screw was tighten) the pumping effect must be created by the HP fuel injection pump. But in case you have not started engine then the diesel can slightly go to the fuel tank - it is not a serious issue and it often goes by this way. But when you do experience more often priming -- this is a signal of suction system lines checking on possible micro holes created by a rust.

2) Might explain why the engine needs a few cranks before starting.-----> AS you know you ve got a diesel engine and the diesel is being ignited by means of a very hot internal air compressed by the piston. The warmer weather the faster ignition in the cylinder. That is why in order to have an air heated by compression - the piston must to does several strokes unless the air reaches an ignition temperature. Besides in order to make ignition period shorter - the glow plugs are installed and their tips are positioned inside the combustion chamber giving an additional help to heat an air before ignition -- but in any case even glow plug can not preheat this air immediately and in any case you have to crank an engine.

3) Is the EGR not so much of a problem on the 4.2 as I only see it being cleaned on the 4.3 There are a few other issues I will try working through before being a nuisance. ----> The EGR valve is responsible for emission and in general this one influences on the output power. In other words the less gass passing holes the less output power and wise.

Cheers/Igor

As Igor says, don't worry. It is normal for the back pressure to subside after a few minutes and the 4.2s do tend to crank a few times before starting, even when hot.

BTW welcome to the club
