2002 Yaris 1.4 D4D

Hi, I have a 2002 Yaris 1.4 D4D and the engine management light comes on in morning after staring but if you stop the engine, let it sit for 10 mins and start it again the engine management light goes out for the rest of the day. I have also noticed the exhaust is very sooty and smokey all the time. Could this be caused by the EGR valve or turbo? Also the engine pinks a lot all the time.

Thanks

It was last serviced 3000 miles ago, 107'000 miles old. I work on cars myself and this is an extremely smokey engine exhaust and the smoke is black, which means unburned fuel or not enough air going into the engine. Many thanks, John

Well it sounds like the EGR valve and as removal and cleaning is a cheap and easy diy job...start there.

You could also have:

failed injector.

John,

I'd go for the EGR and manifold clean. My yaris is the same mileage / engine as yours and only smokes under hard acceleration. I've cleaned the manifold at about 80,000 (had lumpy tick over) but haven't done the EGR yet (I'm not familiar with engines so I never thought to do it whilst I was cleaning the manifold).

Regards,

Craig.

If it's only smoking above mid-high revs, may be the turbo is faulty and not supplying enough air to the engine.

If it smokes at lower revs, but not so much at higher revs, and there is a noticeable loss of power across the board, check the EGR; If it's jammed open it sends exhaust gas into the cylinder at bad times and chokes it.

The pinking is a bit worrying; Is it coming from the engine or the exhaust? Is it like the knocking you get in petrol cars which are on too-low octane fuel, or a more a sort of tappety thing?

I'm wondering if oil is getting into the engine or maybe some sort of head gasket issue could be the problem...?

At 3.30am this morning, my insomniac mental ramblings suggested maybe the engine temperature sensor had failed, giving a permanently rich mixture. That would explain the pinking...and would probably lead to a choked EGR as well..

Thanks, that sounds like the problem as engine runs very uneven on tickover.

Hi, does anyone know where I could get an engine temperature sensor for a 2002 Yaris 1.4 D4D?
