Hi All

First post so go easy on me please.

Just got a yaris 1999 as a run around for my partner and kids.

Problem is i can go out and it starts first time no problem. I will drive 10 min up to the shop come back out and it just will not start.

I will leave it for 20 min and then it will start up. But this is not always the case so i have to get a tow back to the house.

Any help would be great folks.

Thanks Gary

Sounds like a classic sensor problem. hen the wires inside degrade, they touch when cold, but when warm, do not.

Check the crankshaft sensor: down at the bottom of the engine beside the alternator belt drive pulley.

Failing that, could be a fuel pump failing as it heats up... but less likely..

There was a recall for crankshaft monitors a couple of years ago, I got a letter even though I'm a second owner.

My car was checked & it was OK.

Make sure you ALWAYS push the clutch down to the floor when starting! For some strange reason Toyota has stopped the Yaris from starting unless the clutch is fully down, this caught me out frequently when I first got my Yaris and some other helpful chaps on here pointed out a possible cause...which was correct!

Doubt the 99 model had that feature. Mine is a yr 2000 and you can start it with clutch down or not.

I agree with MadFish, sounds like a dodgy sensor somewhere.

Yeah, the clutch thing is only on newer Yaris'.

Not entirely sure why.

I did notice on my old Fiesta it would start a lot easier I pushed in the clutch (Would start in 2-3 cranks vs 5-6 if it as just in neutral), but doesn't seem to make any difference on my Yaris...!
