Trc Vsc Ecu Update Required

After taking my 2005 Avensis d-4d to the local Toyota dealership to get it checked out I've been told that it needs new glow plugs and an ECU update.

I went to Toyota because the VSC and TRC warning lights came on, and then the next day the Engine Warning light came on as well. It was minus 14 degrees celcius when all this happened.

The cost for new glow plugs plugs and the update is £200, but they also said that I may need a new ECU if it crashes. A new ECU would cost £700. Is this likely to crash? and am I really liable? I mean, if they make it crash while updating it, surely they are responsible. (?) Can anyone offer any advice on this?

It's rare for an ECU to crash but if you up-dated a PC which was 5 going on 6 year old and it crashed who would you expect to blame.:)

It is rare, but they don't crash as such, they sort of half update and then fall over so you cant update it or go back. Your dealer is being upfront with you and quite correct in what he says. You don't have to have the update tho, why not pass on it and see what happens?

After having the glow plugs replaced, and the warning lights turned off by a local garage (not a Toyota one) the lights have gone off, and stayed off. !!!

What do you mean by turning them off. I have seen an airbag light turned off with an additional time relay, imitating the regular check on startup. It would never go on, even though both front airbags were missing.
