We have a 2003 GS Diesel Yaris -D-4D. It has a computer giving the average speed per journey. We want the MPG computer installed. Is it possible to do this?

Edit - Post removed as it was based on incorrect info so merely caused confusion....

You could not easily fit the Toyota unit but you could get an aftermarket kit like a Scanguage, a lot of owners have them, easy to fit and offers far more than just MPG readings

http://www.scangauge.com/

The link will tell you all about the unit but have a shop around for prices

Kingo

"so whilst the petrol cars computers show MPG, its not possible for the diesel Yarises to do the same with the Toyota trip computer." Mine does? :) Average and real time m.p.g.

I withdraw my post - My feedback was "hear-say" based on previous posts on the subject where other diesel owners had raised this and I'd observed the feedback.

If you've a diesel and you get an MPG reading then there's a whole new discussions to start....

Good for you alfie and top marks for that. I wasn't trying to be a smarta r s e, just advising that my 1.4D had the function. I know Vauxhall, VW and Peugeot Diesels have mpg facilities on their trip computers to name just three more.

As to how it's worked out, well there's a whole new topic and/or discussion as you say!

You quite rightly said that some of the fuel is returned to the tank, so maybe two sensors, one for fuel to filter, second for fuel "spilled" to tank and subtract two from one?

That device that Kingo mentions is quite interesting - it derives the MPG and a whole lot more from simply plugging into the OBD comms port on the car.

How it does that is anyone's guess, but the info on their web site suggests it seems to work.

And as it also reads and resets error codes, it would seem a really useful tool too....

I have a 2004 d4d yaris and a scangauge. It works ok but its accuracy leaves a bit to be desired. If you change your driving style much, it will read differently to what you are actually getting. But overall, it will get more accurate as time goes on. Every time you fill up you enter the amount into the scangauge and it adjusts accordingly. I also found i had to set my engine size to 1.2L to get a more accurate result per tank. And when i adjusted the speed to match the speedo, the odometer in the scangauge differed from the odometer in the car!!

So i figured if i was more interested in the L/100k then i would adjust the speed to build up the km at the same rate as the cars odometer.

Plus it is great to put a name to a fault code and fix it should one ever come up.

Oh, and it was quick to point out how cold my engine was during the cold spell recently. It barely got above 80c.

And showed an air intake temp of -10!! Brrrrr!!!!
