Avensis D-4D Heating Increases Revs

When I turn the heating on the engine idling speed increases dramatically. Is this normal? Switching on the Air Con doesn't seem to affect revs at all... Likewise, switching the heating off causes the idling speed and revs to slow down.

Do you mean the interior heating or the power heating for the engine?

My Land Cruiser had a 'power heat' for the engine and this was a simple method that increased the revs to allow the engine to heat up quicker, I don't know if the Avensis has the same system

I mean the heating for the interior of the car. The avensis does have a 'Power heater'as well though, but it is operated from a switch by the door, and I always forget to use it, and have never in fact used it.

Yep, engine revs will rise when the heater temperature is set to high. Similar thing when the aircon is switched on. The revs don't rise when the engine is up to full operating temperature. All perfectly normal.

this exact thing happens to my auris 2.2, curiosly I only noticed it this winter.

Anything over 23 degrees c it increases the rev by about 500 rpm.

I do believe this is normal, it's a way for the car to make ip for loss heat.
