Rav4 2.2 D-4D Cold Temperature Acceleration Problem

I have a 3 year old low mileage RAV4 . On a recent trip over M62 whenever I tried to accelerate the car would lose power and I had to change down and build speed up gradually to get moving again. Would drop to 60 mph and would build up slowly to 70. Air temperature was -1 to -3 C. It had this fault both going over and coming back 2 weeks later. I’ve driven in the same conditions last winter with no problems so it is not a fault from new. Since returning I’ve tried to replicate driving conditions but no problem with air temperature 4-5 C. Any help would be much appreciated

Hope so. Haven't filled up since getting back and not done it since weather warmed up. This may be a coincidence but a bit odd. In 30 years I've never taken a car to be serviced/repaired in a garage and will get to the bottom of this in the end! I know plenty about carburettors and petrol so will need to find out about turbo diesels.

hi mate

i ve flw thoughts: clogged fuel filter either mechanically or by parafine (?); clogged engine air filter; poor injection; SCVs playing. You did not state anything abt the above.

Cheers/Igor

Thanks for reply. Fitted a new air filter. Finding out about SCV's at moment to see if they could work alright normally but when temperature drops they don't. The engine is up to temperature so seems to me must be something to do with cold air getting sucked into the injection system.

sure - try to have an air escaped from the injection system.

this might also be yr enemy.

You can always change the fuel filter as it might contain some waxed fuel but I think you might find your solution in the pinned section under "Clean EGR".

Hi anchorman

Thanks for the advice. Will have a look at the EGR as it looks pretty easy to clean looking at that article. One symptom of a blocked EGR seems to be poor economy and it averaged 49-50mpg on the journey which is what it's always done. For what it takes I'll clean the EGR anyhow. Thanks

Can also be poor pulling power but don't exclude that filter either.

I'll change the filter as well and then try it out when the next cold spell comes along. Hasn't done it the last couple of days but it hasn't been cold and the car hasn't been above 60 mph. Thanks for the help
