Car Revving Itself To Redline!

I took the Intake Manifold off my 2.0 Avensis 3S-FE 1999MY to drill some holes for my LPG injector Jets.

Upon reinstalling everything and starting the car.

It directly revs between about 4,000 and 6,500RPM and stays there (Not good for a cold engine either)

I've checked the Gaskets... The Main one, Throttle Body and EGR Valve, all fine.

Repositioned the Injector Rail, no difference.

The throttle flap isn't stuck open...

In fact when I push the accelerator it just gets louder and the air gets sucked in through the air filter housing.

Thoughts?

hi mate

you might to have an issue with:

- MAF sensor covered by carbon;

- partly blocked air passage by either gasket/s wrongly mounted when assembled;

- issue with gas pressure regulator on the gas bottle.

In other words - you ve got a disballance between an air and gas when sucted into the cylinder. And this disballance is in favour of the gas. Your task is to locate an air passage blocking.

Check and revert /Igor

Is that running on gas or petrol that you have this fault?

Have you experience on fitting a gas conversion if not I am amazed that you are doing it, I have had a lot of experience on LPG vehicles and with due respect it is not for a novice to undertake.

Regards Pete.

No engine can run without ingesting air - gulp- gulp!!

If more fuel than air is being added then the engine will choke to a stop. If it revving it's nuts off then is has to be getting air from somewhere and opening the throttle only diverts to the route of least resistance - the inlet.

Simply put you have an air leak in the inlet system. Try spraying sone WD40 or the like around the inlet system and see if the rpm drops.:)

An increase in revs that dramatic needs an increase in fuel. The last thing changed was the LPG conversion so suspect that first then re-check the other work you did.

I've installed LPG systems before on My 540i, 406 v6 and Mondeo... I'm aware of the necessary LPGA COP and get my systems safety checked by an LPGa installer.

The problem is running on petrol, I have the injector pipes blocked off at the Moment, whilst I do other things with the vehicle.

If that's the case then I agree with what Jamesbelfast said.

Good luck with the LPG installation and it's reassuring that you have done this kind of work before and passed the safety checks :yes:.

Regards Pete.

I have looked at your problem and googled this - www.lpgconversiontoyota.co.uk. They may have worked on your version of car/engine, and may able to advise.

I have no experience with LPG but wanted to help.

The previous poster is correct about checking the alterations that have caused the car to run incorrectly.

Good luck.

It is really nothing to do with the LPG system at the moment.

All I've done is removed the inlet manifold, drilled and tapped some holes within 1'' of the original petrol injectors.... removed the swarf and cleaned out the manifold, put rubber pipe and jubilee clips over the nozzles of said drilled holes and blanked them off, reassembled the vehicle and started the car to a 6,000rpm chorus...

Could it be an electric problem? When reassembling the petrol injectors, I noticed there was ice on the injector harness.

Also when I remove the MAP sensor, the revs drop from 6,000rpm to around 2,800....

Any ideas guys?

The car was fine. You modified you manifold. The car is no longer fine. That says to me the manifold modification is the problem. Check that the seals you have made are still in place and working correctly. Might also be that the manifold gasket is leaking. Whatever it is, it is likely to be related to the changes just made rather than an unrelated but simultaneous electircal/sensor issue.

I presume that you have checked that any electrical connections undone to remove the mainfold have been reconnected to the right places? Are the throttle butterflies in the closed position or open (they should be closed)? Do the mechanical linkages to the throttles move smoothly/are they jammed open? For some reason the car thinks it needs to increase its engine revs and is doing so very successfully. I take it that the accelerator pedal is free to move correctly?
