Avensis Starts Then Stops After 3 Seconds

Hello,

We have a 1998 Avensis 1.8 GS petrol with 100k on the clock in the workshop. From cold, the engine will start as normal, run for about 2 or 3 seconds, then stop. With jump leads, it starts OK and keeps running. When its been running for a while, (warm), it will restart OK. It has a new Battery, and does the same on both keys. Seems like maybe the immobilizer is turning the engine off after 2 or 3 seconds. Is there an immobilizer 're-set' precedure, or has anyone any other ideas? Much appreciated.

Hi mate, just a thought try this one ...... use of one of the jump a lead cable say the black one and connect it to the engine block and the other end to the Battery Neg (earth) as you may have a bad earth to the engine as this can cause similar problems. Did it have the same problem before the new Battery?

Pete.

If the problem only exists when cold but runs perfeectly normal when warm it may be worth checking the engine coolant temp sensor.:)

A Battery fault leading to low voltage will cause the engine to stop (in lane 3 of the motorway at 80mph in my case!). What does the dashboard/intruments do as the engine stops? Running fine from jump leads would solve the low voltage hence not cutting out. Even though the Battery is new it may be worth getting it checked. Sometimes you get a duff one.
