hmmmmmm - maybe a glitch on the wiring --- perhaps -- any water getting into fuse box areas ??

Paul, I think even with the 4.2, the alarm was being fitted as it entered the UK and not at the factory. Therefore not that easy to determine whether there is anything common between lighter and alarm harnesses. I wouldn't have thought so. The link below shows how it is installed:

Very common problem is usually down to the door courtesy light switches being grotty or needing a clean etc. Much better than they used to be though. They are very often used by the alarm as well. Also a microwave and glass break sensor in there, shown in above. Possibly something directly in front of the microwave sensor moving slightly with temperature change, as the car stands, but I really doubt that very much.

Cig lighter has it's own ignition switched fuse, where as the alarm will have a permanent supply. Cig ground is supposed to be right kick panel which is nowhere near that alarm install. You might have to remove a bit of trim and see whether the cig lighter connection is secure.

The UK alarm installs used to break into the wiring at the drivers kick panel.
