Electrical Problem

I'm a mostly DIYer having elec. problem with my '91 Corolla LS. First I noticed that my taillights were out (found blown fuse and replaced). However, when I switch on dash lights, they come on for only a fraction of a second, then taillight fuse blows. If I watch the clock while switching on dash lights, it dims at same time but reverts when taillight fuse blows. I'm no expert but this suggests to me that a control relay is not working properly. Funny because I had the relay checked at Dealership and they said its ok. (At least what I think is taillight relay - left kick panel near defogger relay).

Other dash lights such as oil, and check engine lights, clock and radio lights work properly. Only dash and console illumination doesn't work. Could the switch arm be broken? If anyone recognizes this problem or has advice on how to determine which elec. component is faulty, please reply. Electrical problems and Dealerships scare me.

this happened to my corolla gti last tym

when i switched on the lights the back lights blew

radio and oil lights etc worked too...

i found that the problem was that my brake light bulb only had one fuse in it.....

you have too make sure you got 2 fuse bulbs or it breaks the circuit

hey guys.

this problem can occur if you have had the under dash off (under the steering column) and forgot to put connector back on to the dimmer switch.

rear lights and dash illumination go through this circuit

Do you not mean filaments? bulbs don't have fuses??? Well none I know of

Some rear bulbs act as both regular rear lighting and brake indication. On some newer cars you'll find two bulbs one solely for rear lighting and another for braking.
