Hi Guys,

I've got a 2006 rav 4 xt3 2.2D4D, when i start the car every thing seems fine, but if you increase the revs slighty there is a strange whinning noise coming from the centre of the car, I thought it may be coming from the transfer unit, this only seems to happen when everything is cold, any ideas?

It isn't the transfer as that doesn't move when the car is stationary.

Does it do it with the heater and radio switched off?

Hi Anchorman,

I've turned off the radio and heater and the noise is still there, it sounds like a dry bearing!

Pour some warm water over the serpentine belt and see if it temporarily dissappears

Tried the warm water over the serpintine belt, the noise is still there, it sounds as if its coming from the air intake, I've put in a new air filter but the noise remains, removed the air filter again and run it with the air box open, it sounds as if the noise is at the air intake and travelling out through the exhaust! maybe I'm getting paranoid!

Would it be anything to do with the engine closing an air valve at the air filter to stop taking in cold air when the engine is cold, not sure how the air intake system works on the Rav (intake valve beside the air filter housing?) the outside temperature hasn`t been above 0deg C here for the last 6 weeks!

Your neighbour is probably living under the car to escape the fierce winds up there - and has his jacket caught up in one of the belts underneath.

Best to shout loudly that you are about to start the car to allow him a chance to ensure his clothing is clear. If it continues, he must be deaf, in which case wave a red flag (without a red cross for legal reasons) at the lower front of the car.

Ah, the joys of owning oil-burners in winter !!

No valve in the intake, it gets heated by the turbo. Take the pipe off at the turbo and see if it still does it.
