Auris 1.4 D4D Cold Start Noise

Hi all,

First a short description of the car : it has 23k km and 3 years. I've went to the local Toyota service but they could not find anything wrong (no wonder as it's still under warranty until this summer).

The noise is occuring when the car has not been started for about 1-2 days and the temperature is below +5 celsius.

I know the diesel's are supposed to be a little noisy especially in cold weather but until now (last winter)I have not heard such a noise during engine start. You can hear the noise yourself in the video clip during first 4 seconds (a distinct knock synchronized with engine strokes).

Let mew know what do you think.

Thank you!

As you mentioned if not started for a day or two, you will get some rattle at start up until the oil circulates to the top part of the engine. From the sound in the video it sounds like oil a lack of oil pressure at start up causing rattle either at the timing chain or the head of the engine.

  • Check engine oil level top up if necessary
  • What oil are you using 5w-30 helps the oil flow quicker in cold climae use recomended oil for your engine because your still under warranty
  • Once out of warranty you could use thicker oil for better protection 10w-30

The rattle has appeared just before going to the 2 year revision where they've changed the oil (5w-30).

I have checked the level and it's full.

The engine makes more noise when cold it's true, but nothing compared to that! On mine (algo a 1.4 D4D) sometimes i notice a louder noise when starting the car but soon becomes smoother. However, nothing like that!

I use 10W40 (Portugal).

As it sounds like a rattle is the noise staying even once the engine reaches normal operating temperature?

Does pressing the clutch pedal in make the noise quieter? if so its transmission related

Dual Mass Flywheel rattle needs replacing? does the car judder at idle drive different

Heat sheild unlikely but could be hitting constantly against other objects causing a rattle

You need to insist to Toyota they keep the car until its fixed because its under warranty as they by law should try to diagnose the issue, say your concerned of your safety, they should look at in detail. Or tell them bring out another 1.4 D4D car with the same engine compare the sound of their engine compared to yours & they should notice the difference.

Keep us posted..

The sound is disappearing after about 10 - 30 seconds and never occurs again.

Pressing the clutch makes no difference.

I haven't noticed any different behaviour during operation.

I'm worried that someting inside the engine (piston/bolt/bearing/valve) could cause the noise, while the part it's warming up and change it's shape (expands)a little. Also I'm worried that soon after the warranty ends it will fail completely.

I will keep pushing the problem to the service however first time they said something like "OK we've not found anything but this time the inspection will cost you nothing" and they handed me a bill (about 40 euros) fully discounted.

I hope next time they will not force me to pay the 40 euros equivalent of 1/2 hours of "defect searching" which was made by a guy armed with a wrench and it's hands poking here and there for a loose screw/body part.

As you have said the noise goes away after a short period, I wouldn't worry because if something was broken/loose the noise would stay.

Your issue seems to be around oil pressure keep your oil levels to the max line, & if the noise is still present use thicker engine oil it should quiet down.

Ask Toyota to check:

  • Timing chain & Tensioner
  • AUX Belts - Alternator belt

Hi guys!

I have the same engine (1.4 D-4D), and... the same noise!

My Auris is now reaching 50.000 km, and the last winter I've noticed the same problem: in the morning, when temperature is very low (under 2° C), when I start the engine I listen the same "rattle" noise.

If I press the cluch pedal or not, if I keep the Neutral gear or if I start in 1st gear, the noise remains. It's a engine rpms-related noise, not a clutch-gearbox sound, I'm sure. If I accelerate the engine, the "rattle" sound accelerates too, according to the engine's rpm.

I have noticed this defect the last winter... and for all the 2010 spring, summer and autumn I never heard this sound again. Now it's winter... and when temperature is low and I start the cold engine, I listen to this sound again... during 10-30 seconds, after that the sounds expires and my car functions correctly.

I will go to my Toyota supplier, maybe the next month, asking for a control as you said... and I will inform you of the response (solving or not). Flor1n, if You solve the problem... write here!

PS: Excuse me for my bad english... I'm italian, and my english language is only a school-level. :D
