Just Had A Fright In Our T180

I just picked my wife up from work, the car was warm and as I drove down the road at about 35mph and looked in the mirror to see the biggest cloud of smoke from our car. I accelerated and let go and no matter what I did the cloud just got bigger, I had thoughts of an head gasket popped but 5 minutes / 1 mile later all was fine and not a puff of smoke.

Am I right in thinking this was the DPF doing a burn? we have had the car 2 years / 25k and have never seen this before so our MPG reading will be interesting next week.

This happens to me quite often especially in and around town driving start stop and then accelerate hard after a while.

A prolonged run clears this up.

I am very sure it is DPF regeneration and wouldnt worry.

Its only a worry if the smoke is constant and does not go away.

As for your MPG, why should it be any different? Your car has gone through many DPF re-generations before?

I haven't seen this happen on mine, but i have only owned it 2 months.

Its a shame there isn't a light on the dash to let you know that the regen is taking place. It would put your mind at ease if you saw smoke, and would also prevent you from stopping the engine mid way through a regen if it started at the end of your journey.

I hope it turns out to be nothing more than a regeneration for you.

Yes I think it was just the DPF Regeneration as when we stopped at Tesco and my wife revved the car etc while I looked for smoke there was none at all, I suppose it is because I have not seen the car do this before.

could emmiting smoke be an offence under law.maybe not if only for a short period.some police officers would find this an easy pinch judging by some recent cases.
