If its a Toyota - a rebuild will be cinch

I'm self taught rebuilder - with 95% UK experience and from experience of rebuilding an MR2 and my current RAV4 - just go for it

Before you go buying an engine, have you identified the fault?

If the car is not under warranty, doesn't use any oil, runs fine otherwise, the

knocking is not loud and not getting louder by time, I would leave it as is and

happily drive into the sunset. -If it was my car, that is.

I would get the problem identified before taking any action....

thanks everyone for the help and advise... i havent identified the exact problem just yet, but to answer some of the questions above.. i can hear a bit of piston slap when cold (its got 164k on her) and its gets alot quieter after about 10 mins of driving.. almost goes but not quite.. can notice it more at low revs in 2nd gear when slowly accelerating.... i know nothing about toyota engines (no s*it sherlock) :)

i just dont want to get caught out as i travel alot with the job (sales rep) so getting stuck on some b road 200 miles from home with bust engine is not top of my wish list :)

Not wishing to sound patronising, but have you thought about getting a Toyota expert to look at it?

We all know it might not be cheap, but the exact problem may be less serious than a rebuild, and the cost of a diagnosis would be less hassle than that 200 mile from home break down you are worrying about.

Sometimes the money side of things puts off doing a job, and it usually ends up worse and more costly when something gives way.

piston slap is not an unusuel occurence, happens more with engine size.a 2 ltr te will be more prone than say a 1.6 ltr. but am surprised it takes 10 mins to stop.it could be a broken piston ring that causes the ring groove to open up and get noisey, but noise would not reduce much with temp increase.but as others have said get some advice before planning engine/parts replacement.maybe something simple causing this noise.remember a beetle that had a real loud rattle that only went when warmed up.it was a cracked crankshaft pulley.though the noise sounded like a small end.

hope your as lucky.

Does your car use any oil? Has it run low at any point?

My 2.0 VVTi uses about a litre every 4k miles, so it could easily run out if I didn't keep it topped up.
