Hi all. My handbook states that 215x50x17 tyres cannot be used with chains on my avensis 07 plate tourer is this the case? any advice as to what I can do as I wish to go skiing in Feb. I dont want to have to buy a new set of wheels if at all possible!

i agree and only need be fitted to front wheels on front wheel drive cars.read somewhere that goodyear do them.but thereare several other makes.at the cost of them may pay to get a spare pair.cost less than new tyre for two pair of snow socks.

It is hard to beat winter or snow tyres and you don't need a new set of wheels. Just get the tyre fitter to swap them over and chuck your current tyres in the boot. Pop them in your garage ready to be refitted when you get home. Relatively small expense compared to a skiing holiday and you get to keep the winter tyres for next year's skiing trip as well.

I'm currently awaiting delivery of my complete winter wheels from mytyres. I got a complete set of winter tyre clad steel wheels for £400.

Granted, it's a bit of a steep initial outlay, but as we travel to Germany a lot, and the law there changed in December forcing everyone (including foreign cars) to have winter tyres, I took the plunge. On the plus side, I shouldn't get stuck when we have our annual "everything stops" 1 inch of snow in England!

I'm lucky in that I have somewhere to store my alternate set of wheels, so I thought that'd be easier than going to a tyre fitter every autumn and spring.
