I've recently heard of a Yaris having the turbo removed but I can't imagine what it would run like. Apart from it being VERY flat it would mess up the fuel ratios and I would expect it to black smoke and run rich.

The turbo is there to force more air into the engine. The ecu will normally be set up/programmed to inject whatever dieselly oilly stuff into each chamber at the allotted time.

The engine compression ratio is likely to be designed to cope with the forced air volume.

Take the turbo away and you'll need to plug the gap in the exhaust that it leaves.

Then your oil-burning engine will revert to something akin to a landrover. It should run and probably pull the car along. However the ecu and its various sensors will probably become very upset.

On my RAVs - petrol - the failure of a turbo... this example was from the turbo blades shattering... means that it will run and run ok. It won't exactly fly but it will perform quite well. The emissions will fail. It will use even more petrol as I will have foot to the floor always. It did happen and it did run for a wee while to allow me to save up for a stage 3 turbo.

Go for it! You know you want to ! :D

Apologies, Baz.....ah really thought you were joking, but the other two responderisers are far more experienced in this than me, obviously !!! Why would you want to do this, or has your turbo blown its last, and they are somewhat expensive?

Big Kev

If the turbo has collapsed, you can source refurbished turbos from a variety of places. Big Kevs will be available in a couple of days if you let me know whether you want it cleaned first!

hi mate

do not use a general wordings such as "TURBINE GONE" etc -- we're a tech team to help. OK yr engine has been disigned as a complete unit with turbo working to reach designed power (!!)--> it means either part of the power installation removing leads to making an engine job worse. what will you have -- 1) fuel consumption increasing (to compensate power lose due to turbo lack); 2) emissions issue; 3) cat converter issue soon; 4) cleaning of EGR more often; 5) rouugh working of the engine; 6)possible overheating of an exhaust line (because the gases energy will not be converted into the compressed air); 7) head ache --how to live with these six problems. OK -- now calculate the cost of normal major service kit for turbo that costs less than all unreasonable wastes. Cheers/Igor
