Engine Removal Help Required

Evening all, my friend owns a 2001 vvti celica 1.8 and has the dreaded oil burning problem. Lacking compression on cylinder 4 and suspected piston rings. He is dropping off tomorrow for me to sort out and after a few answers as normally rebuild imprezas ej20's and evo engines. First one and main one is do i have to take out engnine and box complete or is it simple enough to split and still take out the top? Second one is i have been advised by a mate to avoid disturbing the head at all costs as even toyota don't shim them up after and just bin them! Normally i would regrind valve seats when there is a compression issue but been told messing with head is a big no no?? Then its just the case of dropping the crank out checking the bores and chucking some new rings and big end shells in!Any advice on major pitfalls and issues i should look out for would be massivly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance

Spen

Have a word with Lee at Se7en Motorsport in Coventry, he only works on the VVT-i and VVTi-L Engines full time.

No, but he has a Corporate section on a dedicated Celica Forum.
