New Engine Avensis 1.8 Vvti

Well after checks my Avensis has been diagnosed with a knackered crankshaft, the big ends, at both ends. Although the car may run a while like this, driven frugally obviously, I want to get it sorted ASAP.

A new engine will work out just as cheap so that's the plan.

Any ideas where I can pick one up, preferably online? Help would be appreciated as I've never had to organise something like this before!

p.s. I will be having to get the engine shipped down here (south coast of Spain) as I'm working here for a while, but don't mind about the costs involved, just must be bought from someone where this will be possible!

Can't help with sourcing an engine I'm afraid but if you are going to get this work done it may be worth getting the garage to source the engine, that way if you have any problems they can't blame you for supplying a dodgy engine.

Is it really worth changing the engine or is it new car time?

Oh god no, I can't afford another car. Worked out costings from a few quotes and should be able to get it done for between 1-1.5K. Still worth it, she's my baby after all.

When you say NEW do you mean brand new or second hand? Do garages not overhaul engines in Spain then, as Druid Boy says the chances and pitfalls of shipping a second hand dodgy oil burning 1.8vvti are huge! A brand new one would cost a fortune, so I would go with a guaranteed recon short engine and put your original head and other bits on that.

Pete.

Well the main reason I asked in here is because I'm not entirely sure of the best option, I simply have a rough plan. To fix it with what it has, i.e. replace the crankshaft will be thousands here, I've had a few mechanics tell me that. That's just Spain for you.

However I don't particularly know (my dad is good mechanically though) what is best to order and from where.

Labour costs a fortune over here, hence was thinking full engine as it's easier for them to drop out/in. If what I'm saying is nonsense, don't have a go! I have basic knowledge....

Have you actually got any quotes for the work yet? Could be fun to see what a Toyota dealer would charge as well. Make sure you are sat down for that one!

Your engine is the 1ZZ-FE and is found in many Toyotas. Most common in the 140hp Celica, a few Corolla's also came with them. Just do a search for the 1ZZ-FE engine and you may find one closer to you. Depending which Toyota it came from, you should swap all your sensors to that engine so that you will not get any error codes. Also swap inlet and exhaust manifolds if they look even slightly different. Take all precautions and on first start you should not get any error codes.

It won't be me doing to work, obviously as my mechanical knowledge is fairly basic. I do have a good local mechanic, Scottish actually, who specialises in engine fitments and more importantly also has all the relevant diagnostic equipment. Thanks for the tips though, should come in handy when searching.

Currently sending off my formal letter of complaint to Evans Halshaw from whom I bought the car to see what they intend to do about it. Other plus point is I bought it using my credit card. Hoping to at least get some assistance with the repairs.

Fitting the engine won't cost that much really, not in the grand scheme of things, as I'm intending on going for a full unit. Around 3-400 I think he mentioned as they have all the heavy equipment and they can do it fairly quickly.
