Diy Clutch Replacement

Hi All

Sounds like i need a new clutch etc on my 2002 D4D. There is no chance of getting it done at a garage due to finances so im on my back in the drive.

I would be grateful if anyone could give me any tips on doing it this way. I have the P-aynes manual which is as useful as ever stating the gearbox has to come out with the engine which i know is guff.

For example do you think i will get the gearbox out just on axle stands?

Would really appreaciate any advice

Thanks

I have 2 RAVs and both have had engine transplants and number 1 has had 2 clutches done since as I seem to burn clutches due to my driving style on the 1/4 mile strip. The garage in Motherwell that I use know the cars inside out and have managed to change the clutch without taking either the engine or gearbox out - it meant taking mountings off and dropping things to enable access. I didn't take too much attention and took no pics...but if you send me a private message I can send you their details and they may be willing to help you with some tips. If you are near Glasgow, they are worth using.

Hi Stryder and welcome to the club.

Just checking - you do realise that it's not a straightforward clutch but a Dual Mass Flywheel arrangement too?

Normally both are changed at the same time. Not an easy job on the driveway I would think. Anchorman is best to advise on that one as he has done the job.

Good luck

Thanks for replys so far.

Unfortunately I will not have access to garage facilities just the basic home mechanic stuff. I realise its an awful job but given the cost of the new flywheel etc its the hard way or no way. Cars been sat for 6 weeks now whilst i try and sort some way of doing the job.

Thanks for input.

Many years ago I used to drive into StAlbans every day along the same road. One morning I noticed that an Escort seemed to be hovering just off the ground, on a driveway, with no visible means of support

Obviously I was curious so took particular notice the next day - it was higher off the ground and I could just see a thin round tube at each corner. over about a week it got higher until it was quite clear that it was gradually being lifted on a cradle of scaffolding. Eventually the owner must have decided that it was high enough because the gearbox was sitting on the ground under the car one morning.

It took him some time to raise the car but it seemed to provide a stable and convenient way to get under the car. He even built a raised standing platform to access the engine area from above.

You can do it on the drive by using blocks of wood to support it at the right height then slide it forward.

It helps to support the engine and I can loan you a lifting bar if you like.

Hey Anchs whats this 5 star

Maybe it means he was once the member of a 1980s pop group.

(Where did I dredge the memory of "5 Star" up from? I wish they would go back there.)

Thanks for replys.

Ive got a normal pair of axle stands and an extra long pair.

Ive plenty of timber and other stuff that i can use to block it up.

Welding up a support for the engine for when i disconnect the engine mounting from the Gbox.

Got plenty of jacks for the weight of the box and subframe etc.

Toyota have just quoted us £650 for a new clutch - but mentioned it may need a new flywheel too at additional cost. Didnt know the two deffo needed doing together - whats the damage on that from a dealer ?

I believe some people can also get that problem from using beer googles the night before.

OK Chaps

Got to the stage where i need to support the engine.

Any ideas where i can attach too.

Theres a bracket on rh side of engine that looks like it bolts to the head although only with one bolt (this supports the various electronics which must be some sort of emission controls).

Any chance of supporting it underneath on jacks despite lack of anything i can see.

Cheers

PS just found this on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toyota-RAV4-RAV4-2-0-D4D-Dual-Mass-Flywheel-Clutch-/220600432360?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item335ccf76e8

Seems to be the type Hemi was fitting given the application number which is adt330206/cty41002ck

I know the issues with SMF however this is incredibly cheap???

Any thoughts??

I am not getting into a debate here as i am simply not clever enough, however for over 40yrs that i know of we have had SMFs and no problems, then the DMF was introduced and toyota + all other manufacturers have had no end of problems, and now people are talking about issues with SMFs + are nervous about using them,WHY? I just don't get it  Stew

I guess folk are just concerned that an SMF, used in a system designed for a DMF, might result in the transmission shaking itself to bits

Good reply Dave, i just get a bit agitated with all this new technology that is making things worse rather than better, cleaning out EGRs for example  and now someone with a headgasket problem has been advised to use "super" diesel, to avoid carbon build up, so we have EGRs blocking up with carbon, headgaskets blowing, assumedly because of excess carbon, + sooty exhausts also i assume because of carbon, makes me wonder if there isn't something wrong with the ECU settings???

But what do I know?? Stew

Anyone any help on the engine support issue?????

Can you rig up a couple of scaffolding tripods with a cross bar or borrow/hire an engine hoist and hang from above with chains?

Its why I asked you if you wanted the engine lifting bar. I used it to lower the engine right down after removing the massive cross member. Its here if you want it.
