Washer Not Working

The washer squirter on my 1998 Avensis Mk1 (7A-FE) isn't working. The washer bottle has plenty of fluid in it. I've had a look at the pump behind the O/S front wheel arch and all looks OK. Both wires are connected OK. When I operate the washer stalk on the steering column I can't hear any noise from the pump and no liquid is squirted. All rubber pipes look OK. Has anyway had a similar problem or can anyone suggest the best approach? I assume that either the pump is broken or that there is a problem with the wiring to it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

This is an easy topic and fix. I searched the forum which you can too and found this from wesifume.

An update for anyone having the same prob. (sorted now)

I went and got a 2nd hand pump from a breakers, turns out it didn't work too, but i did check the connecters and there was power going to it, so it had to be pump. Got another from another breakers and bingo, it worked.

So, to get at the window washer pump. Take off the wheel pump side, there are about 5 screws in the the wheel arch lining you take out, pull it out of your way so you can access the pump. The pump will be on the outside of the bottle, away from the engine bay. The pump has an electrical connection and a small pipe going to the base of it. Disconnect both.

The pump is mounted to the bottle at two points, a spout from the bottom of the pump into a rubber washer into the bottle, and a plastic connecter that slides into a groove in the bottle. Take it out make sure to refit the washer at the base if it comes out, reconnect the new one and voila. New working pump.

I paid 10 euro from a breakers for both pumps, toyota wanted 97 ex vat for a new one.

I have fixed mine in a similar way, but used Wes's explanation. I was searching for my own response from a while back and the answer is the same. It was quicker to copy and paste.

Quick tip, if the wipers work, it is not the fuse.

If your car is the hatchback like mine & Wes, swap the connectors to test the motor. When you try the front it should make the rear motor work instead.

If you have a voltmeter check the supply to the pump from the leads. If you have power when the switch is operated then its the pump. No power = elctrical fault. Good luck

Konrad C & Druid Boy - thank you both. I shall try and get a pump from a breakers - hopefully that will fix it (wipers work OK so it is not the fuse). Thanks again.

Hi there, i had the same problem on my mk2 avensis. I took the motor out and flushed it well with hot soapy water and that corrected the problem. Might be worth a try as they seem to get clogged up easily.Scott.

Scott - thanks for the advice. I tried this and they didn't look clogged up. Did you just remove the bit that pulls off the bottom (i.e. the white bit on the left hand pump) - or did you remove more than this - if so how?
