Rear Right Brake Disc Red Hot

Hi,

Over the last few days while driving for 20 mins or more a high pitch whistle starts to appear from the back of the car. Well when stopped I had a look and while getting close and personal to the R/O/S wheel I noticed it was warm. I went around to touch the R/N/S wheel and this was cold. So back to the other one and stupidly I touched the disc and in-turn left my skin on the disc. Seems the piston has seized.

So i'm off to Mr T. tomorrow. Strange how a 3 year old car have a seized piston.

Oh well...............

Had any work done on the brakes lately if so the caliper may not have been wound/pushed back enough, either that or if the rear brakes have brake shoes for the handbrake they may be jammed onto the disc causing it to heat up.

Either way be careful especialy in the wet you will get the lift off oversteer effect (back end) stepping out if the rear brakes are locked on.

I do have pads not shoes on the rear.

No work has been done in the 18 months I have had the car. The high pitch squealing does disappear when I apply the brakes, but then returns after about 15 secs of driving again.

I had a little look and my brakes are low. 30% left according to Toyota's last inspection they did when I had it serviced last month. Can the pistons be out too far? Will simply changing the brake pads solve the problem?

We'll See...................

Well it turns out the squealing was from a seized caliper and not piston. A clip that comes with the new set of brake pads had snapped and come off, along with a load of dirt had stopped the caliper from moving back and forth.

So just a new set of pads and a clean and all is well.................

Regards

  • 3 months later...

I have this at the moment as well, took it dealers as the warranty is up in 2 weeks.

They told me just by looking, that the pad is seized in the carrier and that it only needs to be stripped and de-glazed to fix it.

They wanted 70 + vat, and they told me they would do both rear brakes.

Thing is about a year ago I took it to another dealer complaining of squealing and they quick as you like swapped both front discs and pads under warranty..but the squealing continued so I took it to another different dealer where I was working and they told me the rears are just corroded

and just need a clean at a cost of 100, I told them to leave it, after about a week no more squealing at all till last week.

It was so bad last Friday that when I jacked up the car I couldn't even turn the wheel then as it cooled it loosened up.

Now my wheel is black with brake dust, do you reckon I should get this done asap or wait 2 weeks for a trusted family mechanic to do it, though I am not sure this can wait as I might not have a pad or disc left to fix..

More than likely the rear Brake Pads will be siezed in the Pad housings, you may also find the Calliper guide pins may be sticking. The right hand rear Calliper Piston is left hand thread so it screws in the opposite way to the left hand side. Hope this may help.

Nope, no extended warranty.

Maybe your breaks need bleeding. When I had mine done originally they felt solid and quick to bite.
