hi all,

i have a 03 avensis d4d and the engine warning light has come on. there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car, speed, acceleration, noise from engine ok. sorry 70k on clock.

i had a prob before where car went into limp mode, guy a garage used a metre of some type and said no prob, so he corrected or cleared the metre? then put foot to the floor and an amazing amout of black soot came out of the engine. car was purfect after that. the guy said i was driving too conservative (not going over 2000 revs often enough)

sorry for long message, just a newbie, cheers james

Hi James, the warning lights can be lit by so many different faults that you really need someone to read the fault codes for you. The engine warning light on my old Rover (I know, embarrassing but I was skint) was lit by a worn contact in the ignition barrel causing a bad connection.

Ask for the code you are getting. If you live near to london, bring it to me, and I will diagnose it for free.

Well the local garage person shouldnt be clearing it out without reason or without rectifying the problem.

I guess you had problem with EGR valve, they way you have been told.

Yes he is right that you need at least once in a week to drive your car on higher RPMs for 1-2 miles in order to clear EGR valve.

Also if you only drive locally and do 5-6 miles / day, you need to take it out on motorway once/ week to drive it on higher RPM.

Cheers.

great guys, thanks for all your help. you seem to have summed my driving to a tee. only do 3-4k a year and thats about right 5-6 miles once aweek to asda for shopping. causing my own probs really. can the garage clear the code and maybe if i change the oil, filter, iar filter, could this help.

cheers james

An oil & filters change should not be necessary if you regular servicing is up to date for mileage or time (eg 10k miles or 12 months). See what comes out of your diagnosis first eh?

hi guys,

just been to garage and chap said it was a glow plug gone, what sort of job is that, one for a garage or something i could try myself. the guy said you may aswell change the four, does that sound about right. works out pricey 4 plugs plus labour. any links on the site on how change these? are they much different to spark plugs. any special tools required and how long?

thanks very much james

Well its not that hard if you know what you are doing. Its wiser to replace all 4 together to avoid further problems.

I am not sure if somebody made thread with pic showing how to change glow plugs. I am sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong.

if you are not very good at DIY then its better to go to garage and let them do the job.
