Flat Battery

Hi All

Yesterday had a Flat Battery (might be on its way out seeing as its five years old). Called Green Flag, an the guy jump started it and it ran fine. I asked him to check the Battery using a Battery tester, While the Engine was running. He went to take the negative lead off but the engine cut out. He says its the first time in 10 years he seen a car do that as the Alternator normally supposed to keep the Engine running. Wanted to know if the Avensis 2.2 Engine does do that or is it just my car that does that otherwise i have a problem.

Thanks

A knackered Battery will stop your engine yes. In my case in lane 3 of the M4 pulling 80+mph overtaking nicely. All jolly good fun. If the voltage goes too low the electronics panic and switch everything off basically. If the Battery is really really flat it will take a while to charge enough to satisfy the electonics. If it went flat for no reason (like lights left on or something) then it may be that the Battery has given up. 5 years life is ok but I would expect better. That said, mine failed with an internal fault/short in 3 years. The challenge for you is that, in order to check it, it needs to be on the/a car. Try jump starting it and leaving the leads connected while both cars run for say ten minutes then see what happens.

Hi mate, did the guy actually check the output from the Alternator if not it may be knackered and that's why the Battery went flat in the first place.

Pete.

Exactly...if after driving for 20-30 minutes it just stops again by disconnecting it, see into what Pete advised.

Cheers.

Thanks all for replying. Yeah he did an alternator test too an he says it's fine. The car runs fine but he was surprised that when taking the negative an tried the positive too the engine goes to cut out. He says he's never seen any car do that in the 10 years he's been doing his job. I just wanted to know why, but he wanted to disconnect the Battery to check it properly using his digital Battery tester. I'll have another try later today an see what happens.

I think the Battery might be on it's way out seeing it's over 5 years old an cars done about 82,000 miles.
