High Tick Over Speed

Hi all. I have a 59 plate 2.0l diesel Avensis T4. I have a problem with an erratic tick over speed. I can take my foot off the accelerator and still manage to get into 2nd/3rd gear and do around about 20mph. This can be frightening at times if you are not expecting it. During the really cold weather, I was on a longish journey with the engine temperature sitting at normal and an outside temperature reading -8 and at tick over I was reading 1250RPM on the tachometer.

Have spoken to the local Toyota service dept and have been told that unfortuately this is normal for this type of engine as it has been designed for efficiency. During the summer when I had no problems with idle speed, I was getting 50-52 mpg, now I am ranging from a low of 34 to a high of 44 on a decent run with the engine at operating temperature. This is an other issue, slow heating up. Again, told this is normal with this engine.

Has anyone got a similar issue or got any recommendations.

This is normal for the engine.

At low temps the engine will idle higher to allow it to warm up faster as diesel engines take longer to warm up than petrol engines. The cold will also affect your MPG.

I agree with Davey. My T-180 does the same thing when starting up from cold. Its the was the heater gains its heat for the cabin temp! Bit of a daft idea in my book, because having the engine rev like that uses more fuel and its not the best thing for a cold engine...

Perfectly normal although a little embarrassing when you are sat at the lights revving away like a boy racer.
