Ancilliary Rattle / Clatter / Tinkle

I have a 94 Rav4 auto, low miles, neat and tidy overall, a fine old bus. Recently it has developed a weird tinkling clattering noise. Hopeless of me on this forum to try to describe it properly, but on the off chance & seeing as I reckon Rav4s are fault free generally I was wondering if anyone had any ideas before I take it to a garage.

I know enough about engines due to bike ownership to know it's not a major mechanical noise, nor is it an internal sound such as bottom end or a terminal failure sound, more a loose noise, like a tinny cover is hitting a moving part. The sound is worse when cold and clears with revving, but returns on idle but isn't always there once warm. It is more of a tinny clatter, low down; as you view the car from the front, I would say the noise is coming from the left (the drivers side) and low down where the pulleys etc are.

suggestions? as I say, totally appreciate this is a toughie without "being there", but on the off chance they are "known" for something failing in that area I thought I would ask.

cheers folks

The heat shield above the manifold is known to rust and lose its mountings leaving a tinny bit of metal to vibrate.

Or

maybe an exhaust bracket?

If not, come back....

1994 = can only be 2.0 petrol

seems lower than the exhaust heat shield ....... will check out exhaust brackets, but again, from experience doesn't sound like it ..... cheers so far

hello again

i'd firstly inspect spark plugs giving a poor spark and vibration at cool idle. Besides - i'd be agree with bothwell_buyer, as well. in case you do not experience lack of pleasure during drive - then a minor issue might to criate your head ache

Cheers/Igor

this is certainly something catching something, the belts all look fine, but it almost sounds like a frayed belt hitting a thin metal cover, but as I say, all belts seem fine.

I'm aware of the misfire / idle style vibrations, it deffo isn't that, but keep the suggestions coming.

drop off the fan belts & run it up for a moment..if its quiet you have narrowed it down to few componants.

Does it have a Cat? could be a dislodged/loose module inside...........

If that does turn out to be the problem and you end up having to replace it, make sure you get the old one back for scrap. Worth £30 up

good idea - a collapsed CAT will probably have bits rattling around the inside of the exhaust pipe.

A loose pulley ??

Have you tried the old trick of a long screwdriver with one end on yer ear and the other placing on different bits to see where the noise is loudest? Don't get yer hair tangled in the belts tho.
