Oem Sat Nav Question

Looks like I am going to have to go for a T Spirit, as I'm sold on the Safety Pack. I know this means making do with Toyota's less than stellar sat nav as part of the deal, but there you go.

Quick question: is the mapping pan-European or UK only?

Full european. And frankly i've no idea why people winge about the t-spirit satnav.

1) its built in. You dont have to remember to take it out so it wont get nicked

2) how often do roads change? Not that often

3) satnav's should be a guide, not a bible!

I've had toyota satnavs in my current gen3' previous gen2 and all of the 3 previous avensis and never got lost with any of them

Could not agree more!!

35000 miles a year on business all over the country and never let me down!

What is it people don't like, is it just a question of wanting the utmost newest maps, when they are not really needed if you use common sense?

You can check the coverage by looking at

www.toyota-mapupdates.eu

or go to www.toyota-tech.eu and then mouse over the OWNER tab then select Navigation Map Updates.

The navigation system to select is probably the Hard Disc Drive (sic).

I have the 2010 avensis t4 with built in satnav which I find superb, I go to France twice a year and have found it excellent.

I also do not understand why people think otherwise.

Maps for the tomtom are changed 4 times a year but the changes are very slight and often take some finding so it would not be my intention to update at each release for the avensis as it would cost considerably more than the tomtom.

Compare the built-in Sat-nav for 2000 GBP with a Garmin Nuvi unit for 140 GBP and you'd understand why many people complain - not only are the maps out of date, but the interface is clumsy and it has poor routing algorithms which on my 2008 I reckon has the same algorithms as M$ Autoroute from the 80s (Toyota's sat-nav routes me via the M42 to go North to the M1 instead of a number of other routes off the M40).

Now I really am confused, maths was never my strong point but having used both garmin and tomtom I do not agree that the built in unit is hard to use, maybe mine is different but I find it fairly easy to use.

The tomtom used to send me on some strange routes but if you know the way ignore it if you don't know the way then none the wiser.

Toyota now include satnav as standard on some models.

But you pays your money and makes your choice, having said that I always pack my tomtom just in case.

I havent used my 2010 T-Spirit sat nav very much but so far I've found little to complain about.

The multi-destination routing seems a bit confusing but I think that is a matter of familiarity. Otherwise setting a destination has not been a problem and so far it has found all the POIs that I have asked for.

It finds the current location as soon as I set off and recovers quickly when I miss a turning.

I haven't noticed how good it is at lane discrimination. My old one couldn't separate a motorway from the slip road so took a long time to notice that I had turned off.

Giving you the choice of three routes before you start and warning if there are traffic hold-ups on the way are useful features.

I did find one routing oddity when, instead of turning right into a side road, I was directed to drive straight on to a roundabout, go all the way round it, and then back along the road I had just been on and make a left turn into the side road instead. It was only about 250yd extra in total but in a car that makes such a virtue of saving fuel it seems a bit odd.

It's actually pretty good on slip roads, i reckon within 10-15 yards

Your routing oddity, I regularly do exactly that in one place on my way home from work, it is much quicker than sitting in the road holding up everything else whilst waiting for a gap to turn right! Maybe there is intelligent life there after all :yahoo:

Any satnav has routing oddities and sometimes for better reasons than we know beforehand. I've had it a few times where I thought I knew better only.to be totally stuck in traffic.

I find the oem hdd system very very good. And love the details, of any built in system in working together with the audio system, integrate with telephony, not obstructing vision, proper day/night functioning abduction the prius version is excellent at that, keep working amongst highrise buildings and tunnels, quick to lock to satellites. And the special party trick, integration with the hud.

Highly recommended.

I guess the main disappointments for me, downgrading from my Tomtom 740 LIVE, are the lack of Google Search, speed camera alerts and — especially — IQ routing and HD Traffic. Toyota's navigation system is like a Tomtom of five or six years ago.

Speed camera alerts? Spend the money you would have spent on Tom Tom live on advanced driver training, then you would'nt need to be told about speed cameras.

Sorry for the rant but I find speed camera databases and there use a complete waste of space, slow down a bit eh?

Kingo

IAM member since '98.

And I don't speed. I just find the alerts strangely comforting.

I used to find them comforting, now I don't speed anymore and don't need them.

Google search is on every mobile phone which I always carry with me.

But granted I haven't used HD traffic so can't say anything about it. But I would find it hard to belief if you say you are.never stuck in traffic again?

It really is that good.

The IQ routing is also clever — different routes depending on time of day and local knowledge based on traffic data collected by Tomtom over many years — that works great. Makes other nav systems seem very dumb in comparison.

It wouldn't be good enough to have an external device.for me. Even when I drive to Italy I only need it for a few junction and the last 15 minutes.

I have a tomtom and navigon pnd laying around in my office. But even now, in a rental I use Google nav on ky Android or navigon on my iPhone. I can seen the point in having and carrying a third device.

Yeah! Aygo Go is the same! DETACHABLE is the operative word here - you have to take it out of the car and leave the fitting open so the scroats can see that there isn't one in the car... you have to leave the glove box open as well so they can see it isn't in there, you have to remove the seats so they can see it isn't under them, you have to leave the boot open so they can see it isn't in there either!!!! what the hell is the point in Toyota supplying one that, frankly, you could buy in Halfords and still have the same fraught life!!! FIT THE DAMN THING PROPERLY or don't bother!!!!

these detachable sat/navs,is it the idea for them to also used as a portable sat/navs.

Acetip... dunno mate, but it sounds logical...

Actually my rant earlier was bourne of experience, my wife had a radio in one of her Alto's which was one of these 'front removable' types... the scroat smashed the side window and forced the boot to nick the radio then realised that it was neither in the glovebox nor in the boot! loads of damage for no reason....

just shows how thick these people really are and unfortunately I can see a glut of Aygo's being broken into for the satnavs, whether they are in there or not :(
