Or simply follow the Irish system and have an insurance as well as tax disc, or more sensibly do what most of Europe does and have a tax and insurance sticker on the number plates, so that there is an instant visual check from the back as well as the front. I never understood why the tax disc is actually on the front window - surely the back would be the easiest place for coppers et al to look?

That said ANPR might make all that redundant, but probably costs too much.
