1990 Carina Pillar Aerial Broken

Hello my friend has a 1990 carina and he pushed the pillar aerial down before he went into the car wash, unfortunetly the radio reception is now gone haywire since he pulled it back out and the aerial itself moves in and out of the pillar pretty freely almost too freely, also i can hear a lot of noise when i push it in and out like cables and wires moving inside the pillar which shouldn't be moving, i removed the wipers and the plastic cover to see could i gan access from there but thats not a goer. it looks as though the only way in is under the dasboard. has anyone done this procedure before and if so have they an idea on how i should go about fixing the old one or replacing it with a new one
