Hi All

Just wanted some advice off you guys. I Have a 07 Auris T180 thats only done 31K. Today its been in for its main service and the tech guy has advised on the report the water pump is leaking. Now they have said its NOT dripping and lost not fluid but has condensation/water on the outside of the pump. Im a little confused becasue surely if its leaking i should loos water. They have advised 9 times out of 10 if will just fur up and reseal itself. If i want it replacing its £300 fitted. Also i am going abroad in July and doing a 2000 mile round trip. What would you guys advise? Im currently seeing what i can sort out with yota as im not happy a 20K car should need a new water pump at such short mileage.

Hope to hear back

Carl

Condensation or water outside of the pump could be due to the weather.

As long as the pump itself is not leaking its unlikely to be a problem.

If you dont intend to replace it yet:

Keep an eye on the engine temperature display on your dash if it rises above halfway suspect it is the water pump

The coolant level if its lower than the max line or you notice the level is dropping from the reservoir tank it will be because the pump is leaking

For the next 2000 miles leave the engine undetray off & keep a visual check for leaks

Should be okay as long as its not leaking, but if the engine does overheat you risk headgasket damage.

Diesels are known to run cooler than petrol engines known as thermaly efficient, unlikely to overheat if your on the motorway, you may notice a rise in engine temperature whilst stuck in traffic or city journeys because the engine is not getting enough air to the radiator to cool. Keep your heaters on full hot blast to prevent the engine overheating if the temp display rises.

If its definatley leaking your best option is to replace it..

no doubt you will be watching the coolant level like a hawk, looking for the smallest level drop.so dont forget as antifreeze expands with increase in temp, the level will be different when hot to when cold.

Leave it alone. The seals in the pump require some lubrication and this is provided by the coolant. Means you get a VERY small leak all the time. Tends just to be a build up of crystalised coolant on the outside of the pump. Keep an eye on the coolant level and so long as it isn't going down significantly leave it alone.

My local dealer has spoken o customer relations for me today and to my amazement Toyota have agreed to cover the whole cost for an new pump. Now thats what a call awesome customer service. I didnt have to argue the point they totall agreed with me. It made me realise again why i have been driving toyotas since 2004.

  • 3 weeks later...

I really really don't know why Toyota is not changing these pumps as a recall action. A few weeks back me and my girlfriend took the Auris to the dealer because the coolant was at the minimum. They checked it and did't find any leakage, filled up some coolant and said it's all fine. When I asked them why the coolant is in the minimum, as it should be a longlife coolant and the cars is only 1.5 years old with only 14K on the clock - they said it could be the cooler cap or smth else and advised me to keep an eye on the coolant level. After a bit of a discussion they called the mechanic and the guy said that he checked everything and find no leakages. And that the leakage should be pinkish and greasy. He also said that those pumps start leaking at around 40 000km, wich is around 25 000miles. When I asked them why don't you change them right now - no answer. I have a fiew buddies with Aurises and they had the leaking pump problem at around 25-30K miles. One of them was charged with the change because the car was 4 years old. So "Aurischeadle" you got lucky
