Avensis Sticky Pedal

I have a 52 plate 1.8 SR Avensis.

This morning on my way to work I was driving at around 50mph and took my foot off the accelerator to coast around a corner but the accelerator didn't come back up! I had to hold down my brake to slow me down to around 30 slip out of gear (the engine was roaring with revs at the limiter then pulled off in to a (luckily) long lay-by to slow to a stop. I thought right away it was my mat but on closer inspection it was well clear of both pedals. After wiggling the pedal with my hand and waiting a few minutes the engine turned over fine.

Im really shaken and a bit scarred to go near the car at the moment. My problem sounds exactly like the recall models but not in the list. Anyone had any similar problems?

No personal experience of this in my car but have had a similarly scary experience on a motorbike which involved popping lots of wheelies before finding a wall to put the front wheel against and then stalling the engine. (Before anyone asks, this particular bike had neither keys or a kill switch and was not stolen, just ropey.)

Anyway: 2 bits of good news for you. 1. The most powerful thing in your car is the brakes. Even with the clutch engaged and in gear the brakes will stop the car - but you have to apply them hard and trust them. Of course it doesn't slow down as quickly as normal - which is why most people give up on them, thinking they aren't working. 2. Even if you dip the clutch and the engine revs to the limiter the engine is being protected by the limiter so won't rev itself into oblivion. It is a good idea to stop it reving though!

Hope you get this sorted soon. The roads are scary enough with other cars trying to kill you, never mind your own car joining in!

I had this happen in my Auris, and immediately thought it was the 'sticky pedal' issue, but it turns out it was the car mat under the pedal.

The edge of the pedal went down below the corner of the mat, but the mat held it down.

Check your mats are in the correct place and see if the clips have broken that should hold the mat in place.

I had my clips replaced by Toyota and it hasn't happened since. Remove your mat for the time being if it looks like it is the issue and you should be fine.

I hope that helps.
