Time To Change Battery/exhaust/pads/discs

have got a 54 plate D-4D, and just wanted to know 'roughly' if I should be expecting to have to change the Battery / Exhaust and the brake pads and discs?

I've done 73k miles and the Battery has never been changed. It did go flat over the bad winter period but that's only cos one of the kids left the passenger light on in the back! The car has been a little bit sluggish on getting started so perhaps wondering if it will help changing the Battery?

Also, don't know after how many miles you usually need exhaust changed?

The brake pads/discs were done around 50k miles. I've been getting some light kocking noises coming from the back of the car, and not sure if one of brake pads wearing thin, or from exhaust or bushes?

Anyway, it's always good to know what to expect to have to change in near future, to budget for costs - so any advice very welcome.

Hello, if it is the original Battery you have done very well so a new Battery is a good measure, get a decent one thats right for your diesel car. The exhaust system can last a long time on a diesel due to less corrosion from the inside so that should be ok. When your car is due for MOT the tester will usually advise of any work that may be required soon as an advisory note with your MOT or just ask for an opinion on the parts you are worried about and to be sure ask them to show you. If it's not then find a local friendly garage to take a look and again show you the areas of concern, the light knocking could be worn bushes on the suspension links.

Thanks Pete, some good advice there. The bushes don't look too bad although the last service the guy said that he replaced one. Replacing a new Battery, would this need to be done at garage or is it a relatively easy task for someone with a bit of know-how? Would DIY replacing it interfere with the on-baord computer?

Wont do any harm to yoru computer or ECU, except it will reset it which is good once in a year.

Ezy if you know bit about DIY.

If you have any doubts about the condition of your Battery why not get it load tested. Most decent Battery suppliers (not your usually so-called fast fitter outlets) will check the Battery and alternator for free in the hope of gaining a sale. Better still many won't charge for fitting.

Similarly when it comes to brakes - get them checked out - don't wait until things get worse - it usually ends up costing more.

Remember brakes are like your best friends - you miss them most when they ain't around.:)
