Warning! Yaris Exhaust Extremely Expensive.

Hi,

As the exhaust on my 2007 1.3 Yaris looked a bit rusty I thought I would gather a few quotes for a new exhaust...take a seat and prepare to be shocked!!!!!!!!!!!

These are the latest prices from my Toyota dealer to supply and fit the following exhaust parts:

REAR Section (Tail pipe) - £227.70

MIDDLE Section (With unremovable CAT) - £705.71

As Toyota have stupidly designed the Yaris exhaust with an unremovable CAT (unlike any other cars I've had) a new Yaris exhaust will cost you nearly £1,000....and considering the exhaust is constantly bombarded with water and salt from the inside and out all we Yaris owners could be forking out that price every 2-3 years, which I find absolutely shocking. I have NEVER had to pay such a price (10% of new Yaris price) for an exhaust pipe on any of the cars I've had previously from Ford, Citroen, Rover or Vauxhall.

If you are thinking of buying a Yaris or any other Toyota....DON'T!!!!!!!!!!

You could save yourself some cash by cashing in the CAT as they are worth ££££ http://www.catbuyer.co.uk/

Hope this helps the blow

The original post is obviously written by someone with no experience of fastfit exhausts and none of the real world..

People in the real world cut exhausts to bits, weld in joins and attach small sections.

As for not buying a car because of the possibility of having to buy a new exhaust in 3 or 5 or 7 years time,,, muppetry in my view.

PS

My exhaust is 8 years old and original...

As exhausts usually rot from the inside out and the op's "looked a bit rusty" that's not a reason to change it?!

There's no obligation to buy from main dealer either.

My original 2000 Yaris was still happily on its original exhaust when we sold it at 8 years old.

The only time I ever bought an exhaust from a dealer was when I bought one of the first MG Maestros and that exhaust failed before the aftermarket companies had started making replacements themselves....

And yes, they are a lot more expensive from the dealer than from the aftermarket.

Its standard practice for the manufacturer to make exhausts in few pieces and the afetrmarket people then often make replacements in "more" pieces.

As rpj says, exhauset rot from the inside out, as the acidic water expelled from the engine just sits in the rearmost silencer and eats through the seams, especially if the car is only used for short journeys and doesn't run long enough to warm the exhaust through and evaporate all the water inside it.

Having said all that, I too am shocked at just how rusty the exhaust pipework of my 2008 Yaris exhaust looked after just 12 months...

In 35 years of owning cars, I've never seen exhaust pipework that looked so rusty from the outside so quickly and although it might just be superficial - and until it starts leaking it won't be an MOT issue - I too worry about the longevity of the pipework.....

Here you go.

This is for the Mk1 1.3 Yaris from Timax. Just found this with a quick google.

They don't list a solution for the Mk2 1.3 Yaris yet, presumably because there's no market yet, but you can see here how they've created an extra centre section and you just cut the original pipe afetr the cat if you need to replace the centre section...

Centre section is £47 and rear section is £48.

Would expect something similar for our Mk2s by the time we need ot change them....

And here's the Bosal catalogue entry for the Mk2 1.3 Yaris that we have.

Bosal are one of the mail aftermarket exhaust manufacturers in the UK.

At present they're just showing the rear section available - presumably because there's just no demand for the centre section yet.

As its almost always the rear box that fails first (because of the internal rot details mentioned above) then this should cover us with a reasonable aftermarket solution if and when we ever need one...

i know what you mean.got a shock when i saw how rusty the exhaust was when i brought my auris 2 years old and 19600 mls.had cars for many years, and worked on countless. but never seen as much external rust.why dont toyota treat the ouside of the exhaust system with zinc or something simular.

as said exhaust rust from inside.vauxhall years ago had small drain holes in the silencer to drain of off water caused by condensation.if i remember correctly for every gallon of petrol burnt,a gallon of water is produced.whether this still applies with mod engines i dont know.short runs are a killer for exhausts as the system never gets warm enough to clear out the condensation and the acids in it.

You're correct re the small drain holes. I don't do it now, the days of crawling around under cars are over, but I always drilled a couple of small 2.5mm (1/8" in English) holes, one each end, front and back at the bottom of the rear box.

My exhaust is still all original after 10 yrs. Those prices you have are just laughable. You could probably have a stainless system made that would last a lifetime for less.

I bought ( and fitted myself) a new back box for son's 2001 Yaris 1.0. Cost ? Not £200, not £100, not £50 but £39 odd delivered. Works perfectly...

years ago mk111 cortina exhauust systems were one piece.if you wanted to replace a silencer, ford did one that fitted over the pipe when you cut the ooriginal off.vert easy to do.mind you it was easier to get under the cars in those days.

mk111 cortina? You youngster. Some of us cut our teeth replacing exhausts on Mk1 cortinas!

They were the good old days when cars rusted that quickly that the bodywork could rot away all round the top of the front suspectsion of a five year old cortina and the top of the springs and strut would suddenly pop up through the bonnet as the car collapsed on the road.

It was so common that you could buy replacement body parts from your local corner car accessory shop and weld them onto the front wings as replacements yourself....

They were the good old days of easy DIY car maintenance!

You pipped me.

Earliest I go back is an A40 Farina (well actually it was the earliest my dad went back to whilst I was around to travel in it...)

That said, my physics teacher at grammar school (yes really showing my age now) did have an A30 van - just like they use in Wallace & Gromit.....

I'm a relative youngster amongst you lot at 50! My first was a 1972 Mk3 Cortina that self destructed at exactly 100,000 miles. Working on it was an every weekend event. I scrapped it and rescued it's Ford recon 1.6 crossflow engine and fitted it to my next car, a mk2 Escort along with servo brakes and a Lotus Cortina diff to change the gearing. Soundproofed the car with carpet underlay and underseal. So called "modders" now - pah!

My first car was a 1929 Riley 9 Monaco fadric bodied saloon. It never needed an exhaust.

First car my dad drove was a Churchill.

He had it from 1944 to 1945.

He even drove it around Europe. He said they never even asked him for his passport when he arrived in France.....

He had a European driving tour. Started off in Normandy, went through France into Holland. Spent a few weeks at Arnhem and then went on to see what Germany was like....

He never had a single puncture in all that time....

He said it did 1 mpg, but fuel was a lot cheaper then and he got his fuel provided free by his company, so that didn't bother him.

Yes there were a few blind spots - not the least was the fact that there was a big pipe thing attached to his roof that was operated by people sat in the back seats that sometimes moved around and blocked his field of view.
