RESULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After my mini explosion of smoke, the garage have now decided that there is a fault, they say the turbo that they fitted when the first one was done is also faulty! so are now replacing it. Still selling her as soon as she is fixed because of the way they have spoke to me but at least they have finally admitted there IS a problem :yahoo:

Not before time. Just goes to show how much these people will mess you around. Not good enough in my view.

I have a '10 plate 1.4 yaris diesel, she is my second yaris as I was more than happy with the first. However she is guzzling oil like no bodies business. I origionaly took her back to the garage and was told the turbo had gone, hence using too much oil. The turbo was replaced and she was still using lots of oil so I took her back at the garages request, they then decided that the new diesel engine is exceptable using a liter of oil for every thousand miles. I think this is utterly absurd. The lastest figures i have are 19 days ago I filled the oil and in that time I have done 1700 miles, I have had to refill the oil this morning! My other yaris would go the whole 10000 miles before the oil was 'toped up' not competley refilled.

Has any one else had a problem with oil, and does any one elese think that a liter every thousand miles is ok? At this rate over a three year period I will be paying nearly a thousand pound in oil!

Hi we too have a 09 yaris d4d and it sups oil at the rate like yours,1 ltr.per 1000 miles .Toyota all so say it is normal after having the car in the garage one month. It all so started to smoke on start up that bad you could not see the car lol.The guys told us it normal when the car is out side and cold and did my wife know how to drive a diesel car? After telling them its kept in a heated garage and she had done 100000 miles in her seat diesel i think she as the hang of it by now.The car is still uing oil done 18,000 now and all they do is give her oil to top it up.first and last toyota shame because she like it

To sharon and nick

They have admitted to me that it is a faulty turbo, they said the one they replaced the original with is also faulty. They've had to bin a whole batch and order some more in. It was Carlisle toyota that confirmed it so you may want to use them in back up with your garage. My car did the same as yours and gushed smoke! He said the 'cold' line to me too lol.

If they have admitted there is a fault they should replace ALL the faulty ones!

Uh, Internet Top Tip: You REALLY shouldn't post your e-mail address on a public forum unless you really like nigerian scammers and viagra adverts ; Better to use the PM (Private messaging) system  (It's the little envelope icon on the left of every post)

It is beginning to sound like a bad batch of turbos has gotten through QA tho'...

I just can't believe they are fobbing it off with such a cavalier attitude; For starters, *no* common rail diesel should smoke to a significant degree. Sometimes you get residual soot being blasted out the back if the car hasn't been on a motorway or something for a year, but that goes away pretty quickly, and they certainly shouldn't be using up so much oil.

My oil level barely changes over the course of a year; The only times I've had to top mine up is after I was thrashing the nuts off it to try and clear out the crud built up in the EGR and injectors (I believe this is what they call an Italian tuneup )

Is there another Toyota dealer you could take it to, or maybe an independent garage who could give a second opinion?

thrashing it wont make slightest difference to EGR cos on inlet side.

Well it raises the exhaust temps so that will affect the EGR, since the EGR is basically a pipe from the exhaust to the intake!

Hi just to let you all know Toyota today as fitted the car with a new turbo and ecu upgrade {not bad to say we have had this problem now for 12 mts approx}.Told my wife that they know what the problem is with the turbo,s you should not drive on the motorway for long time because the turbo does not like been on boost too long also does not like to tick over {cant remember seeing that in the glossy bits lol } not .Anyway we will see if that does the job. Makes us wonder were we can drive it then? Back and forwards to the garage at 40 mph ? Who knows. One thing we do know will not buy a Toyota again.

That's got to be the stupidest response I've heard from a garage. So you cannot drive it on motorways and you cannot let it idle. I guess that rules out any distance or city driving then! Doesn't leave you with too many options left regarding where to drive it!

If they are taking this stance, a call to Toyota customer service and a chat regarding their products "fitness for purpose" sounds in order.

Guys im no expert - however is it possible that there may have been a misinterpretation of what the garage said. As you say Hartside its a stupid response from a garage (if thats what they said) that you cannot drive on a motorway for long periods of time. How the :censor: do all the Scanias trucking up and down UK motorways every day of the week manage.

My sincerest apologies if it comes across as me not believing what your saying Sharon and Nick - but is it possible that what the garage said

was "you should let the engine idle for a few minutes after being on the motorway (or other fast driving)".

:censor: me thats unbelievable its getting worse with modern diesel engines - sir you can't drive in town because you will mess up the DPF - and now madame you can't drive on the motorway because you will :censor: up the turbo. Might as well just wave the white flag on modern

diesels and concede defeat. Oh hold on - Hauliers are still very happy appearently with truck engine reliability - so hang on a second

while i ring Mr Scania and see if he can do us a nice 1.4 engine for a Yaris  .

By the way Sharon and Nick i do believe what youve actually said because to be frank some of whats happening with things going wrong

with modern cars is completely taking the :censor: Michael.

I hope the new turbo and EGR cures your cars problem

Just to add one more thing to what i said in the last post - the reason

i was wondering if there was a misinterpretation is that a common cause of turbo problem is people,

driving hard or driving fast on the motorway and pulling in and switching off the engine straight away while

the turbo is still hot. Obviously on a one off basis - this wouldn't do it much harm - but if you were doing it regularly it would.

Ive seen it regularly recommended that after hard and/or fast driving (including towing) that you allow the engine to idle for a minute or

2 to give the turbo a chance to slow/cool down. Its therefore possible that the Garage were actually saying that the engine was (or could have

been) turned off too fast after a hard motorway run. But then you ask yourself the question - how do Ambulances manage seeing as your hardly

going to leave the engine running at a crash seen and your definitely not going to let it idle for a minuite or 2 if some sod is in

urgent need of life saving help. Having said that given how poorly main dealers and manufacturers seem to deal with problems like this

i would not be at all surprised that the dealer actually made the stupid comments he was quoted as making.

Well unless you're driving at over 4000rpm for hours the turbo should never get hot enough to be at risk of failure, but you must let it cool down after running it for any extended period of time.

This generally means letting the engine idle for 5 or so minutes. This can be by driving really gently once you get off the motorway (Easily done since you'll spend a lot of time waiting at traffic lights and road work queues  ) or leaving the engine running for a while once you park up before switching it off.

I do feel that Toyota are focussing their research on hybrid tech tho', and this is crippling their newer diesel engines.

It is a pity because the older 1.4 D4D in my Yaris and the 2.0 D4D in my brother's Corolla have been some of the most pleasant diesel engines I've used; The variable turbo is set up perfectly and the torque curve and gearing are set up perfectly for town driving and motorway driving!

They are also the highest revving diesel engines I've ever used (1000-1500rpm more than all the VW and Ford diesel engines I've used!) which is great fun when I'm using V-Power diesel :D

Yes i agree sounds daft but true. Also like to say my wife did 100,000 miles in her last diesel and knows to let it cool down after a long run.The worst thing is all the garage ever said 1 ltr of oil per 1000 miles is within the toyota guide lines.Think its a case of had your money tuff. Just pm driving instructer she will tell you all about her d4d yaris and how good hers as been. NOT .

Yeah, that's just stupid.

If the car was 20 years old that might slide, but not a brand new one!!!

If running the engine at low speed to let the turbo cool down was co critical, surely they'd add yet more electronics to the diesel engine to make sure it happened?

PS I have owned a few turbo diesels before, and yes I did

why cant they fit a water cooled turbo like my old passat had.if you shut the engine down whilst the engine was very hot through an accident or mistake,an over temp switch brought a electric coolant pump to circule the coolant around the turbo till it reduced the temp to a safe level.i dont know if vw still use this method,

suppose its all down to cost.

Just to say got the car back today and i know now how toyota think they can make the turbo last longer. They have re mapped the ecu so it now boost at 2500 revs not 1800 as before.going to take it back tomorrow. Now only shows 55 mpg with the new turbo and is so slow of the mark now wait wait wait oh of we go lol

My first Yaris was like that, you would put your foot down then wait five mins for anything to happen! They are unbelievable. My third turbo is going in on sat. Will only have her for a week before I pick up my new car. To be honest I can't wait to get rid now. I know you get the odd dud but Toyota cx service has been dreadful.
