Timing Belt Or Timing Chain Pls Help Me

Hi peeps,

this is my first post on this forum & I need a bit of help. I have a Rav 4 2.0 VVT-I petrol on a 2006 plate. I need a 60K service to catch up as I missed a service interval & only had a service carried out 5 months ago.

Any how, I was quoted by the local Toyota dealer £499 as I need a new timing belt according to them. Now I have looked on the net & in the service manual & it only mentions a timing belt on a D4D engine. I was told by an independant dealer (national auto centre) that it does not have a belt, but rather a chain & it should not need replacing but potentially tightening up?

The official dealer said they could not tell me without looking at the car which I found a bit odd. If it needs changing then fair enough but I don't want to get stung for £500 instead of £269 which is the cost without the belt.

Any advice would be greatly received.

many thanks.

Hi,Mm (have to shorten the name somehow :D ),a very warm welcome to you to a great club.

As mentioned by others you have a chain fitted on the timing side of your motor which I believe is self adjusting, but dont take that as gospel. There will be a friendly telling off for me if this is incorrect.

The only belt you have is the one you can see and if that is changed would not cost as much as quoted.Even if that snapped it would not cause any damage to the engine itself as it only drives the ancilliares although you would be better off not driving it like that.

If you look in the "pinned"section above you will see many useful, well written articles regarding DIY repairs if you are that way inclined.

A very warm welcome to Ye Olde Madhouse, Oh Master of the Ground Which Needs Drained,

In the name of Robin Hood's Parish Priest, who is your local Toyota garage? Do not encourage them by giving them your car if they are not aware of such fundamentally basic knowledge about its workings !!!!

Going by my questionable arithmetic, unless it has an extra warranty on it, it is now out of warranty, so based on your local Toyota sphincti, why not search out a local trustworthy independent to donate your cash to?

Apologies for rantification, but you are being very misled by these people...again, welcome t'club.

The name of Rob Hood's priest is Tuck and me thinks that you are right and that they are trying to "TUCK UP" our Steel Town member!!

By the way BK Robin Hood belongs to Notts and not those Yorkshire tykes who think it's OK to name their airport after him. :yahoo::yahoo:

Lorne Greene will be turning in his grave, Del. Just really angers me that people can be fed such rubbish. I have heard many complaints about Arnold Clark dealerships, but Toyota Bishopbriggs have done me proud thus far. I am not in any way linked to these lovely people, but if Harri wants to reconsider replacing my now well deposited on discs.....

The chain does not require any form of adjustment, it should be good for the life of the car!

Your dealer sounds like he should be working on lawn mowers

Big Kevalino, are you still whinginating about your rotordiscs and paddys?

Kingo

I dont think they would last long in the grass cutting machinery business as some of the specialist mowers are more complicated than cars and you need a midwifery course to work on them!

Also, thanks is due,Kingo,as I could not work out BK's conundrum, but then it does'nt take a lot to fox me!!

Guys, can I just say a huge thank you to all who have responded in this thread. I now feel quite confident that there is no way it has a belt but rather a chain that needs nothing doing to it. The dealership in question is Pentagon Toyota who I bought my baby from in the first place. dealership

I could not actually believe they did not know whether or not it had a belt without looking at it which is why I may now take it to national auto centre who have had it in before. My only concern was that National Auto centre do not use "official Toyota parts" but should that really worry me with a car out of warranty that now only does about 10K a year?

you can ask them to use toyota service parts as they will charge you as much anyway.

maybe have a word with Trading Standards and then take it in and see if they charge you for a new belt?? As you say, sounds unreal they could not tell you without looking at the car! ulterior motives??

Or you could buy the official Toyota bits from Parts King / Kingo on this forum (he's the Parts Mgr and Director of Jollies at Lindop Toyota, but he will try to help...), then get a labour only rate from a garage.

If you don't know how to send him a PM, just ask.....Davrav will supply you the LINK.
