a while ago i mentioned that my toyota dealer was using Castrol magnatec professionel C2 5w 30.this is the only oil in magnates/edge range they recommend for diesels with dpf.and cant be purchased outside the motor trade.

anyway the dealer now uses Mobil 3000 5w 30 S.thats what he says.

anyway out of pure interest i went on the Mobil web site, and there loads of car spec oils, but no mention of a 3000 S.

there are several other in the 3000 range but non described as S grade.

not to be beaten i then checked out the Opie site and yes they mention the 3000 S type but describe it as a 5w 40 spec. so gave them a call and they did not know of a 5w 30 S.

not to be beaten i went back to the Mobil site and under contact section i e mailed them and got a reply.that the dealer may have made a mistake and it was one of the other 3000 oils in the 3000 range.so phoned dealer but workshop forman at dealers but he was on leave and the chap i spoke to did not seem to know which oil they used,so suggested i phoned back when foreman was back.

you may think i am wasting my time, but as i served a indentured apprenticeship as diesel fitter many years ago and worked on engines for many years, lubrication has always interested me.

so i am going to sort out if the dealer is using 5W 40 oil and claiming it to be 5W 30.as i beleave 5W 40 is cheaper at times than 5w 30.

the dealer where brought my auris (petrol)when asked which oil they used showed me can of toyota 5W 40.which is not incorrect but not ideal as 5W 30 is.and they know this.is it a matter of cost to them.

Mobil 1 ESP meets the C2 spec, as well as VW's 507 00. But Castro EDGE only meets the 507 00 and no C2 for the DPF. Both are a 5w-30 grade...

thats correct, just had 10 ltrs esp delivered at £53 plus £8.50 postage.thanks to others advice.

wonder if some of the complaints of poor consumption on some of the diesels is caused by using an oil that doesent meet the C2 requirement and this is causing restriction in the DPF and the system is trying to clean itself, thus increased consumption.

know very little about modern direct injection engines, only know what i read about them, but no hands on experiance

so may be way off the mark.

think how efficient these modern diesel would be, if it wasnt for having to meet the strict emmission rules.

but we have to save the planet.

have had sorted out the question about Mobil 3000 S 5w 30.

thought i go to my toyota dealer instead of phoning and talk to the workshop manager face to face.

explained that i could find anything about this oil on mobils web page or even emailing on the help line, nor had Opie Oils seem to be aware of it.

the man listened to what i had to say, then produced a 1 ltr container of Mobil oil showing it was 3000 S 5w 30.he could not understand like myself why the mystery about it.

contacted Opie Oils and told him that it does exist.he was very helpful and answered several questions.among things we talked about was duckhams 20-50,as someone on these forums thought it was a veg oil.he confirmed it was not.he was very helpfull

anyway peoblem sorted.hope you havent been too bored reading this.
