Given the cars age the springs will have given a little, so you need to replace them as a pair .

Kinda depends on what use the car has had and whether it has been used for towing/carrying heavy weights.

I'd maybe tend to replace both, although in saying that when a spring broke on one of mine, I just had 1 spring changed.

On our Mercedes Atego a leaf spring broke on the front and we just got the 1 spring replaced.

Most traders and garages will recommend changing the pair but I would just look for a single replacement from a breaker. I've replaced single springs before and not had a problem. If you are going to buy new you might have to change the pair as the wire gauge (thickness of coil) may be different from original.

Hey Bothy, just noticed you've been awarded a star. Does that make you a Sheriff

I have replaced springs on cars before: and usually replaced only one.

BUT if I was replacing a front spring which has to carry the extra weight of engine etc, I would replace both as there is bound to be some sinkage. Son's Yaris has had new front springs. Mine - which is 3 years younger and a diesel - has not. When they are side by side, the sinkage on mine at the front is obvious..

And if the other spring shows signs of rust, I'd replace it before it broke as rust usually precedes a break...

hi mate

normally it is good practice to change both springs at the same time to be sure the 2nd one will not let you down "tomorrow"

cheers/Igor
