Pre Obd-ii Electronics

Hello everybody!

I own a 1993 Corolla (EE101 sedan, 4E-FE 1300cc 88bhp) and I would like to play a little bit with its electronics ;)

I found info on how to read error codes by making the "Check Engine" light blink and I know there is a serial data stream coming out of the ECU at a low bitrate (around 100bps). Does anyone know any way I can read that data? I've been searching the net for a long time and the only thing I found was readers for OBD-II vehicles (1996 and newer) and OBD-I readers for Ford/GM ECUs. There's also a mention of a VBoB (Vehicle Break-out Box) that is supposed to connect in series with the current ECU and provide a high speed data stream with all the diagnostics, but I have no more info on this... This seems to be the most interesting solution, but it could be too expensive for someone that doesn't own a service garage...

Anyway, any info on how I could read diagnostics from the ECU into a computer would be very helpful!
