What tyres have you got fitted, cbr?

My previous car (T3x Avensis 2.2D4D), originally had Bridgestone Turanzas fitted....what a blooming racket they made !!!

Changed them to Dunlop SP Sport 2's, and these really made a big difference, although I was still surprised that such a quiet cruising car still had intrusive cabin/road noise from the rubbers.

I had the opportunity to change wife's Rav 4 (3 Door) to Bridgestone Turanzas at very favourable prices, and the Pirellis fitted to it were nothing short of deafening on the motorways. Took the gamble and fitted Turanzas I previously rejected on the Avensis.....utterly incredible reduction in road noise !!!!

No Comprendez, que?

Big Kev

those bearing changes must have cost an arm and a leg.

if you go on line and look at tyre reviews they rate the tyre noise for the tyres they test and some are a lot noiseir than others.

i see that some time neaxt year tyre makers are going to have to put on their tyres more information including a noise rating.which will be handy information, as a noisey tyres can spoil a cars driving experiance.

Some tyres are uni-directional and if fitted the wrong wat round will be noisey so check out that aspect. I have seen many a dumb tyre fitter make that mistake.

You could also try interchanging the front and rear wheels to see if it makes any difference as tyres can become biased after a while.:)

Very good points, James, and furthermore my "C" Class Merc a few years ago originally had steel wheels and trims, and was exceedingly quiet. I got the offer of some uttely mint OEM Merc. alloys, to which I fitted the same tyres as were on the steel rims. Ye McGods...the road noise was woeful.

I am no acoustic engineery boffin, but I swear those alloys resonated at a totally different frequency from the steels, and it was very noticeable.

Boff Kev

Hi,

Just wondering that recently I started hearing humming noise coming from driver side front trye. Nothing changed except I had car wash and after that lots of humming noise.

Any suggestion what could it be?

Are these bearings? And if yes can anybody tell me how much bill should I expect?

Thanks.

I have always rated Dunlop Sport / SP2 as quiet, along with the Bridgestone Turanzas mentioned above.

it could be a bearing,i say a bearing, cos cant see both going a the same time.its ok to drive usuely for a bit longer before getting worried.if it is a bearing you need to find which side it is,often you can tell by when going around a bend, say a right hand one, then there load is taken slightly off the right wheel and puts more on the left.if the noise reduces a bit then it will be the right hand bearing.and the reverse for a left hand bend.

the wifes hyundi has a bearing going (for about 3 months now)and the bend test does not seem to work.

so its going to be plan be B,tha is jack up car and place put hand on the suspension springs and spin the wheel,

with a bit of luck should feel a bit of vibration from dodgy bearing.a noisey bearing can be run for a long time before it gets critical.but there is always an exeption to the rule.

as to costs, well your dealer is going to charge more for a bearing than one from a motor factors.but then you have to strip out the housing that the bearing is in,then you will need be able to press out the old bearing so you need access to a press.so its not a diy job if your competent at thaat sort of thing.

mind you ive never done a toyota wheel bearing so just maybe its removed in a different way than the run of mill bearings.but as no one else has given a reply. ive stuck my tuppence worth in.

it would cheaper done at independant garage than a toyota one.should imagine a well equiped garage will the bearing already obtained should do the job in an hour.

Thanks mate, really appreciate your reply.

The humming sound is coming from driver side front tyre. Also if I turn the steeing wheel fully to anti-clock wise and turn the car in anti-clock circle, it create stranger noise (ocassional).

I cannot understand how and why it happend. Is it because I keep an eye on correct tyre pressure (which I assume is a good habbit)or may be due to pothole.

well I have asked part king to give me quatation for wheel bearing. Also I had a look at repair manual and you are correct that it is not DIY. Break pad/ discs need to come off and then it can be replaced.

One more thing, humming noise is not heard at < 50 MPH, and it is heard on > 50-60 MPH. Can this lead to MOT failure (coming in late june 2011)?

Cheers.

Sam, are you sure you haven't caught the kerb or something as the could affect the front wheel alignment, this can cause the tyre noise you describe. If not then maybe you could just fit the spare wheel to the right front and see if the noise disappears. You are spot on, changing front hub bearings is not really a DIY job.

Good luck anyway, regards .... Pete.
