Just received a recall letter today. Anyone else received one?

What year is your car and why is there a recall?

2005 m8.

Googling gave me http://www.toyotarecall.org/20101130-toyota-prius-water-pump-recall/ which is similar to what my letter describes.

For Gen2 Prius then,...

The reason for the recall is....???

The link explains it. Perhaps your browser / device is not accessing it properly?

Anyway, here are the salient bits...

To quote:

“The water pump is part of a system designed to cool the hybrid powertrain components and is separate from the engine cooling system,” said John Hanson, Toyota Motor Sales National Manager of Environmental, Quality and Safety Communications. “A fault in the water pump can cause air bubbles to build up and disrupt the flow of coolant, which can lead to overheating.”

The heating of the components could trigger the check engine light “on” condition. If the temperature of the hybrid components becomes too high, the vehicle will enter “fail-safe mode” to prevent hybrid component damage.

and:

Toyota dealers will replace the water pump with a newly designed one at no charge to the vehicle owner as long as the owner arranges for service before Nov. 30, 2013.

Gen2 owners better get that done quickly, you really do not want air in your coolant. Well unless you want to end up with a nice smoking exhaust :-)

Erm, how would an Inverter Coolant pump cause the petrol engine to smoke? The Inverter coolant and Engine coolant are separate cooling systems.

I have not received any recall. My gen2 is a 57 plate. Is it for ALL gen 2s or just certain year models? I am going into the dealer on Wednesday so I shall ask about the recall.

With a date like that it is onviously not too much to worry about

I checked with the guys at Burgh Heath regarding how long the vehicle would be off the road. Answer is that the job should take 1 hour 20 mins, so you should get the car back the same day. If they want to keep it for longer, call 01737 367600 and they will tell the dealer to give you a free replacement vehicle.

Booked my car to get it fixed. Might as well get a free valet. It is getting a bit dirty :)

Just thought that my Prius previous owner had a private plate which is now on their new car so mine has a new 57 plate not previously issued to the same vehicle, presumably if my vehicle needs the recall it will eventually be traced back to me via the engine/chassis number etc ?

Hi Capn - didn't you tell Toyota when you became the proud owner? I had mine thru' a dealer but also contacted my local dealer so I could be put on their database.

I did send off a card to Club Toyota supplied in the pack I was given & it had the engine number etc .

Private plates cause so much hassle, the service booklet of course has the original numberplate on it which adds more complications for me when I eventually sell the car altho of course it's easy to check the engine numbers are correct etc and I have the sales document from when I left a deposit showing the private plate number and final payment receipt with the new number  never again :censor:

If I don't hear from Toyota then I'll contact them to make sure.

When the vehicle was first registered is of course no indication of when it was actually made so a Nov registration could have been made and shipped only recently whilst another made at the beginning of the year could have been on display in the dealers window from a previous shipment several months but sold and registered in Nov

Checked with dealer today with regard to my Gen 2 Prius. Dealer assured me that my car is not in the batch of cars requiring water pump recall. They also stated that details of the cars that require a recall can be found on the official Toyota web Site. I have not checked the Toyota web site to see if the statement is correct.

I noticed a .com rather than .co.uk in the VIN check link posted in a previous, wouldn't it be wiser to check against the UK database rather than a USA one?

http://www.toyota.co.uk/cgi-bin/toyota/bv/frame_start.jsp?id=prius_waterPump

At the bottom of the page there is note:

"Models affected by the recall:

Prius Models built between August 2003 and May 2007.

No other Toyota vehicles sold in the UK are affected."

If some owners cars weren't registered until December then the Prius wasn't as popular as I guessed at least in 2007, as the end of 2008 I had to wait a month and I thought that was bad, and now for the Gen 3 it seems to be 16 weeks!

I've just rechecked it with the above link and it tells me they don't have a record of my VIN number so I typed in my registration number and it doesn't recognise it either so I put the private plate number that the vehicle had before I bought it and it came up withe the correct details- 2007 1.5 T.Spirit ( altho that numberplate is now on a 2010 Spirit)

and they are pleased to confirm my vehicle is not affected.

This means the card I sent re change of ownership has not been updated in their records :ffs:
