Starter Motor Problem?

My car (Avensis 2.0 Diesel Estate) won't start this morning.

When I turn the ignition key, the lights all come on (so I think the Battery is charged). When I turn the ignition key to the last position, I get a noise like a rapid continuous series of loud clicks ( I would say it sounds like somebody running a stick over a washboard) from behind the glove box. The engine does not turn over at all.

I'm guessing that this is a starter motor problem, but I know nothing about cars. Can anybody confirm, or be more specific about the cause of the problem.

Many Thanks

John

if you turn your side lights on and try starting again do the dash/instrumnt lights go very dim.if so its a low battry or poor Battery connections,

Is that not the noise from a sticky dicky relay in the main fuse box behind, as suggested, the glovebox area?

Just a guess....
